My neighborhood still has an ice cream truck. I'm curious how many other cities still have ice cream trucks. They seem outdated at this point.

EDIT: thanks for all the responses! Its surprising to me that ice cream trucks are still going, but that's awesome!

One drove by my house a few weeks ago. Before that? I haven't seen one in the wild in years.

I haven't seen a truck in a long time, but there are still dudes on bicycles selling Mexican ice cream and whatever those orange uh... Ring thingies are.

Where I'm at in Texas, the ice cream truck runs almost year-round. I'm fairly certain they're selling drugs, because the amount they charge for ice cream is too expensive to be worth it.

Na I get it. It's hard to say no to something so special for a kiddo

[-] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Do you just straight up ask for meth or is there a code word?

[-] [email protected] 13 points 5 days ago

My neighborhood has them. There are adult versions now, they are just called food trucks.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

I don't think I've ever seen a food truck drive around looking for customers. They're usually just stationed in one place for the day.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

Food trucks move to good spots all the time and many of them have apps that tell people were they are setting up.

I have seen many food trucks that just sell deserts and ice cream..

What's outdated about it?

People like ice cream, and with global warming even more, , so a truck strategically parked (at the school exit, in the park, in front of that tourist hot spot) will drag an audience. It may be a bit harder for the ones going from neighborhood to neighbourhood but it's still a thing. We even have one stopping at my work parking, which is the opportunity for informal discussion with coworkers I see less

You have to get out of your house and talk to someone, you can't just order it on the phone. It's def old school 😅

[-] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago

Yeah they drive around all summer in Norway. Hear them once or twice a week.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago

Same when I'm in Denmark, I love it. Too bad we don't have them down in Italy.

[-] [email protected] 10 points 5 days ago

Absolutely that's where I buy my weed.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

Pretty much daily, I hear that song playing throughout my neighborhood.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 5 days ago

Still got them here in Australia. They've always been a rarity and somehow they're always somewhere else where you can't see them yet they sound close by but they seem about as common now as my childhood in the 90s.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

They're certainly around in New York.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

same here, we have one that regularly comes to our part of the neighborhood, but most of the time its cold season, so there isnt much demand.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 4 days ago

The ice cream truck stopped coming to our estate about 5 years ago though there are plenty of kids about.

I do see them parked near playgrounds etc. quite a bit but not doing the rounds like they used to.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 5 days ago

We have two different ones that come through our neighborhood and drive me crazy because they both play an ice cream truck version of Stereo Love by Edward Maya and have been doing so for close to a decade now. Get a new song already!

[-] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago

I've worked repetitive, hot, boring jobs before, but I don't know how the people working those trucks can keep their sanity with that music on repeat. I get sick enough of Christmas music in stores after hearing them like twice, and the blaring of an ice cream truck is 100x worse!

[-] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago

I thought it was kinda mandatory for ice cream trucks to play Greensleeves.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 4 days ago

They used to sell illegal ciggies in the UK don't know if they still do

[-] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

I'm uncertain of your instance membership.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago

I think there's one that comes through my neighborhood. I've never actually seen it, just heard it, and it never seems to... actually stop. When I was a kid, the ice cream trucks would stop and play their music for a while so people had time to grab their money and run outside. This one just seems to play a few bars of a song as it drives through, makes me wonder if it's actually an ice cream truck at all.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago

Yeah and it’s honestly super creepy.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

I’ve seen one around town still. Although I suspect like 90+% of its business is just from parking right outside the town pool in the summer.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago

Occasionally hear the jingle during summer

[-] [email protected] 4 points 5 days ago

We do sometimes? Like there's no route, maybe twice a summer an ice cream truck will stroll by with music and all.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

I live in a major city un Germany. One of the big ice cream parlors has several trucks that go to parks and areas with many offices. I don't think I've ever seen one driving through a residential neighbourhood.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago

We have one going B2B in the industry area around lunch time. I've got coworkers literally running down to get some on some days.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 5 days ago

We have a bakery truck that drives around playing the ice cream truck music. Does that count?

[-] [email protected] 2 points 4 days ago

Yep, one stops just outside my house. When my daughter was little and asked what that sound was (the ice cream van music) I'd say it was the "music van" and it just plays music for people. Didn't get away with that for very long!

[-] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

I hear one sometimes, but either it zooms by when I’m not looking or it’s just going to the nearby playground.

When my kids were little, we tried to chase it down a few times without any luck

[-] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Perth Australia, we still have one frequent us in summer. Its why people ask me why do I have a tenner stuck to the back of my front door.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Mister Softee has an app to track the truck's whereabouts. I have absolutely used it to find his ass and hunt him down. Ice cream trucks have evolved into the 21st century. No one has decent soft serve anymore in my area. DQ closed like 5 years ago, and this dude is just driving around potentially bringing it to your door. Mister softee is the goat.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

One just started coming through my neighborhood like 2 weeks ago, and there's a kid a few houses down who seems to always be ready to run out and stop the truck. Takes easily 10+ minutes for the music to fade out. Like, I hate to be a grumpy old man, but that music drives me fucking nuts! I'm on the verge of trying to beat the kid to the truck just so I can bribe the guy to drive away as fast as possible

[-] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Our ice cream truck seems to also do coffee. I haven't bought anything from it but I've seen it around

[-] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago

There was one that came around my old house on occasion before I had kids, and it sold amazing elote

[-] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

There is a local one who comes through during the day once a day.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Still a thing.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

We have dueling ice cream trucks around here.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

even as an adult i would still rush out for an ice cream sandwich at the sound of that sweet sweet music

[-] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

It’s the middle of winter, haven’t seen one for a few months, but they’re common in summer.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

I live in a small town, but we definitely have a couple of them floating around.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

Ditto. If you don't work from home, it's likely you just miss it.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

I miss the corn man

[-] [email protected] 1 points 4 days ago

Usually when you hear the typical ice cream truck songs in Germany, it's a dude rolling around looking for old metal.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago

there's an old guy who drives an icecream van around my area nearly everyday during the summer
