This is bad for any card secondary market, think magic the gathering or pokemon. Usually you send or receive singles or maybe 5 cards at most as a letter, now this needs to be a package i guess.

I would also echo the fears of a throughly digitalized society

There are some japanese mechanical pencils that rotate the lead a bit every time you push it down.

That vendor, jetpens, is an american site that imports from japan..but sitting in europe, for now this seems to be the best method of acquiring japanese writing stuff short of actually flying there personally. You might find that interesting. There are some stylish ones, I wish they had existed when I was younger and needed them in school

A young men came out to operate the pump? Really? In Germany, within the last 30 years? This seems highly unlikely. Those places are almost never manned with more than one person and they don't leave the counter.
