Hey everyone,

I've got a bunch of weird stuff happening with my computer (both in Linux Mint and Windows 10) and hoping you could help me figure out if it's a software issue or if it's a hardware issue then which component is borked.

The fact that both systems are having issues is making me think it's a hardware issue? Both OS's are on different drives, not dual booting from the same disk.

Linux issues:

Distro: Mint 20.2

Kernel: 5.4.0-202-generic

CPU: Intel i7-7700k

GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070

Memory: 16GB

It started with Firefox crashing randomly and now the display is forced at a weird resolution and it doesn't recognize the second attached screen. It has no option to change resolution in GUI and the xrandr -q output doesn't list any devices and talks about failing to get size of gamma for output default. I'm trying some stack overflow and arch wiki guides about adding manual selections to xrandr but nothing is working. Firefox seems to be stable now but unsure. I tried NVIDIA guides about making sure blacklist file doesn't exist and forcing non-wayland sessions but that didn't work; the NVIDIA X Server Settings GUI also boots completely blank.

xrandr output:

{22:20}-{xxx}-{~}$: xrandr -q --verbose xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default Screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768 default connected primary 1024x768+0+0 (0x528) normal (normal) 0mm x 0mm Identifier: 0x527 Timestamp: 45214 Subpixel: unknown Clones: CRTC: 0 CRTCs: 0 Transform: 1.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 1.000000 0.000000 0.000000 0.000000 1.000000 filter: _MUTTER_PRESENTATION_OUTPUT: 0 non-desktop: 0 supported: 0, 1 1024x768 (0x528) 59.769MHz *current h: width 1024 start 0 end 0 total 1024 skew 0 clock 58.37KHz v: height 768 start 0 end 0 total 768 clock 76.00Hz 1920x1080_60.00 (0x545) 173.000MHz -HSync +VSync h: width 1920 start 2048 end 2248 total 2576 skew 0 clock 67.16KHz v: height 1080 start 1083 end 1088 total 1120 clock 59.96Hz

I do have timeshift backups for a few days ago but seeing as I'm not sure if this may be hardware related I'm not sure whether to go down that path.

Windows 10 issues:

Before today it went BSOD pretty quickly after logging in (safemode works fine) with errors such as 'kmode exception not handled' and 'bad pool caller'. I've since updated the nvidia drivers by booting in safemode and now the screen is black with the bottom menu flickering in and out (with no apps, just the start button) on both screens.

It seems like the issue is to do with the graphics card but, again, I'm not sure if it's something I can fix by typing a magic spell or two, or if I need to buy a new card.

Appreciate any responses, thanks!

My uncle potentially, he may not bring it up (which would be nice) but still on edge about the potential of an argument. He's been dragging down my kid cousin to be just like him too. Even if there was an argument I know I'm not going to have any backup from the rest of my family as they're all leaning the same way, they're just more softly spoken and worried about 'civility' and wouldn't say the worst of it out loud.

That sounds extremely fake.

Do you have anything to back up this fever dream?

Apologies if this is the wrong community, happy to remove and post elsewhere.

I'm essentially a beginner to programming. I know some python (made a game of hangman with ASCII art for example) but nothing more complicated than that.

I've been wanting to learn some programming, whether it's python or something else, and I think I've decided on a project I want to make (if possible?).

I aiming to make an emulation front end/GUI selector. I know there are things like RetroArch that are great, but it doesn't have access to all emulation tools (e.g. doesn't have Xbox/PS2/switch).

I'd picture just opening one program GUI that can select the "system" you want to use, then it provides a list of games.

The complexity that I can see is that even if I can run the actual emulator in a container or use a custom GUI to open the emulator it won't 1) be able to show a games list within the same GUI and 2) it won't be an easy back and forth to change emulators.

Not looking for anyone to solve the problem for me, just hoping for some advice on where to start like languages and what I should be trying to learn etc. or if it's even possible. I'm aware there's a high chance it's not!

I've got years to learn and build before my kid might use it, not in a rush.

Thanks!

We've gotten our 1yo eating more solid foods rather than purees and I've found an oats recipe that is generally liked. If they eat enough of it at dinner then we've gotten a sleep in until 5:30am without a 3am bottle. It's a slow process but now there's more solids I'm optimistic we'll be able to sleep through the night soon. They apparently eat a heap at daycare but they've been hesitant with solid foods with us, maybe we just need to go for the stuff with more flavor. Terrified about choking though so maybe it's more our hesitance.

Also walking with only one hand held for a while rather than holding up both hands.

Growing up really quickly every day.

This makes way too much sense, don't know how I didn't see it before!

We've transitioned our 1yo out of our bed and to their own cot. We had to co-sleep after they puked on their old cot and refused to sleep at all once it was cleaned. Every time we've gotten them used to the cot something messes it up like travelling etc. but it's finally looking like something stable.

I was amazed the other night because it was the first time ever we didn't need to hold a hand or pat them to sleep, I could just lay them down in bed and watched them drift off.

The sleep is a little better but still not sleeping through the night and also constantly sick from daycare so they keep waking up cause of the coughing. When they were with us it was a lot easier to put the pacifier back in and go back to sleep but now we have to get out of bed to send them back to sleep.

Then there's also the night feeds... we're still doing a 10:30pm bottle and another bottle anywhere from 3am to 7am, it all depends on how much they ate during the day. Which they've now decided they don't like any of the food we make even though it's exactly the same stuff that would be at daycare. Which then prolongs the cycle of not eating enough and needing night feeds and then not eating much because there was milk overnight. I feel like we have to cut the night feeds somehow but it feels really cruel to starve them when they're used to it...

I just hope getting them to their own bed will be a positive turning point and we'll actually be sleeping through the night soon. I know other people have it worse but everyone I talk to directly has babies that sleep from 8pm to 8am with no stirring and no bottle, it's making me feel like I'm messing something up. Overall still feels like we're taking positive steps though.

Thanks for reading the rant.

Hi! I'm tweaking my burn deck and had a question about the wording/rules around Nahiri's Lithoforming.

The text states:

Sacrifice X lands. For each land sacrificed this way, draw a card. You may play X additional lands this turn. Lands you control enter the battlefield tapped this turn.

My question was whether the additional lands have to be played while the spell is resolving or at any time during the rest of the turn? I'm guessing the latter because otherwise it would say "you may play X additional lands", but just wanted to check.

Looking to combine this with acidic soil and valakut for some fun where I don't take much/any damage.

Mint with GNOME

It just works and I like the look of it, never really like cinnamon for some reason
