No. Even when I look in the mirror, I deny it.

I thought we were all bots.

[–] [email protected] 44 points 4 weeks ago (2 children)

Hmm. I thought I was a paid schill.

Still trying to figure out the getting paid part.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 4 weeks ago (8 children)

It depends on what you’re peddling.

MAGA gets paid in lies, and progressives in disappointment. Liberals and conservatives get a weekly stock tip call from Pelosi or Tuberville, respectively. Tankies get paid in vodka and cigarettes, and libertarians in crypto.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 4 weeks ago (1 children)

Whoa, hey, I could be getting vodka and cigarettes? I'm switching teams.

I don't know anyone besides myself that even uses social media IRL.

no and i don't think anyone here is real. every account is a russian psyop bot trying to make leftists appear insane and stupid

[–] [email protected] 18 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

You were programmed to say that because I’m the only one that’s real.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

Nice try bot, I’M the only real one here

Really, this amounts to a question of who has recommended lemmy to others. Which is an interesting question.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 3 weeks ago (2 children)

I've recommended it to others, but none are interested, which is extra surprising considering how many of them work in tech or tech adjacent.

It took 10 years to meet anyone that used Reddit. I assume it's gonna take another 10 to meet anyone on this platform.

no. It's difficult to recommend it, "no it's good trust me, there's like none of the subs you like, and also you should go to the settings and block this list of words, also block these instances, and also do you know what a Tankie is?"

It's easy to find other Lemmy users IRL. Show up to any Linux meet up, and roughly 5-10% seem to use Lemmy.

Well of course I know him. He's me.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 3 weeks ago (4 children)

But even for reddit I only know a person in real life that uses it. I tried to convert him, he said "there are too many Linux apologists" 🤷🏻‍♂️

[–] [email protected] 13 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

See? Tankies aren't a problem at all. What're yall worried about?

I don't even know anyone who uses BlueSky and that's considerably more trendy lately. Granted, most of my contacts are 20 something college girls so it's pretty much TikTok as far as the eye can see.

Not yet, but it seems to be growing.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 4 weeks ago

My own spouse, but...as the statisticians would say, that is not really two independent samples.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 weeks ago

Other way around, I know people in rl through lemmy.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 weeks ago

Nah. My brother, wife, my two best friends and one co-worker are the only ones who even know it exists, and that's because they know I use it as an alternative to reddit since the API fiasco. It's honestly pretty obscure, but I like it that way. I'd love to see larger niche communities, especially since r/stalker was one of the only places I could actively talk about my favorite game series, but Lemmy has been a far better experience overall.

If they do they probably don't talk about it, tbh.

I do. But despite my best efforts at explaining and advertising this platform, none of my friends seem to care 🥲.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (1 children)

Nope, but I have had the thought that small-scale regional meet-ups could be fun.

On the one hand, smaller old-school forums do/did that sometimes and it can be really cool, if thinking in the spirit of the old internet.

ON THE OTHER HAND, I remember the infamous pictures from the Reddit meetup and good God, maybe not?

you can't say that and then not link the pictures!

[–] [email protected] 11 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago) (7 children)

This is the one I was thinking of, but there are several interesting ones. I guess I'm being an asshole, maybe they're all awesome. They certainly seem to be smiling and having fun, so I'm just really the dick here. But here's the picture. Fuck, it is just...a lot. I don't know. NSFW.

I don't know anyone IRL that uses the fediverse. They just use everything else and then complain it's all owned by billionaires

[–] [email protected] 11 points 3 weeks ago (1 children)

Unfortunately I can barely find people online that use Lemmy

Let me stop you before you suggest a narwhal bacons at midnight equivalent for lemmy

What's the lemmy version of "the narwhal bacons at midnight"?

Yes I have been a Lemmy advocate since I joined, but I have only ever gotten one person to use Lemmy. I told one of my daughters friends mom about Lemmy. She does not allow her daughter to use social media. Except for Lemmy.

So that is it. My one conversion. I have kind of given up on trying to convert people. I still love Lemmy and the Fediverse, but the year of Lemmy mainstream has yet to come.

Guy from work posted a Lemmy meme link.

Sorry, my mirror image got hold of the phone. He's not real, he doesn't count.
