Hey you that knows everything about painting. Student here and my employer is paying me to repaint. I'm very much a beginner (painted like 3 times in my life). They know it and they still let me do it (to give me some hours during the summer break).

I'm done with the primer and boy is it ugly... Do you know if everything looks ok? Do you see something painfully wrong? And if you have some tips and tricks, I'm happy to hear them!

Btw, if this isn't the right community to ask this, please let me know!

Came across the Bunnies and Burrows ttrpg, and it made me wonder if there was a wargame equivalent. I mean, the Warriors series is still super popular, sk there's gotta be a cat-bases wargame somewhere!

Hey folks!

One of my life goals for 2025 was going back to single purpose devices and avoiding algorithm-based media consumption. No smartphones, no AIs, no Spotify.

I'm quite happy with my offline music library, even if it took a while to organize. I use MusicBee (it FINALLY runs perfectly via Wine, if you install some dependencies in your prefix) to listen, find artwork, find lyrics, create playlists and so on and I sync them to my Innioasis, a little iPod Classic clone that supports modern features like USB-C charging.

But here's the thing... how are people finding new music nowadays? I'd assume TikTok and automatic suggestions from your music streaming services, but are there alternatives?

TikTok would probably work for me if I didn't stop using social media, but I did. Apple Music's algorithm sucked tremendously when I used it in the past - it always recommended me Ed Sheeran, an artist I strongly dislike and not anywhere near adjacent to my taste in music (and tapping 'Not Interested' a million times never worked) and Spotify's worked well for a while, but then it started getting extremely repetitive and pushy, "Shuffle" became essentially "Your 10 most recently listened to songs, repeated often, and sometimes we sprinkle two suggestions you already didn't like but we think you should like actually"

A job I applied for is asking me to submit a work sample, but I no longer have access to any documents from past employers.

My only option seems to be to recreate a document myself, which I am able to do. Is this how most people approach such a request?

I assume it would not be necessary to reveal that it isn't the actual document unless prompted nor would they be able to tell.

There is also a possibility a writing sample might be requested if I advance to the next round, but again I have no samples in possession.

I want to swap the side panel with an aclyics sheet. But it doing so will leave a ugly silver dempt on the top and bottom side of the pc, since the original side pane wraps around to hold itself in place. Is there a way to patch it up?

Or anything else concerning, for that matter. (BPA, maybe?)

I eat a tin of these basically every day. Have been doing so for well over a year now.

No, I'm not doing the whole "sardine diet" or whatever it's called where you eat nothing but sardines. I'm proud to say I started eating sardines daily before that fad came up. And I eat a lot more than just sardines.

Anyway, I know "fish" in general tends to have high levels of mercury, but I've heard that basically the amount of harmful heavy metal sort of toxins in fish generally varies directly with the lifespan of the particular type of fish in question. (The longer it's been swimming around in mercury-laden (or whatever-laden) water and eating mercury-laden (or whatever-laden) stuff, the more mercury will build up in its system by the time its caught, cooked, put on a table, and consumed by a human.) And I've heard that sardines in particular are quite low in such harmful toxins. (Maybe anchovies would be even lower? Not sure.)

My googling for an answer to the question of whether the level of harmful stuff in sardines is so low that eating them daily wouldn't be an issue hasn't really yielded helpful results. So, why not ask here?

(I have heard that EVOO is "better for you" (whatever that means, specifically) than non-virgin olive oil. And the particular brand of sardines in "olive oil" I get don't say "virgin" anywhere on the packaging, so that might be a reason to switch brands. Not sure whether it's really worth it or not. And the other brands are always way more expensive.)

Argh. Alright sounds very dumb but here am I seeking for opinions to knock some sense into me.

So, I have this girl who is my online-only friend who I've been chatting with for almost 4 years now. We gotten really close and too close to call her just a friend. She termed that we might be in a situationship. My knowledge regarding relationships is 0 as I have no prior experience in relationships. So I'm learning as we go.

I'm enjoying so much of her presence with me chatting online that I think I am not doing any rational thinking, like, putting off stuff just to catch her online to chat and bunch of other stuff. I have recognised this having adverse effects on me so I've started to prioritise things this week due to which I have gotten very less time chatting her.

Today, being the weekend I wanted to spend all evening chatting with her with no limits on my schedule as it is a weekend. I have set these crazy expectations of just spending all evening with her doing nothing but chatting.

But to my disappointment, she replied late and turns out that she was out somewhere attending a party of her friend. I just told her to enjoy the night and acted nonchalantly. But insidesl, there is this huge disappointment that was crushing me.

I have started to think some very bad stuff like:

  • that I should just let people be and enjoy being alone
  • depending on people always leads to disappointments
  • expectations should be curbed and always have low expectations about everything
  • being alone is the best way to treat yourself
  • stay away from people and indulge in alone entertainment like watching web series or movies at home

I know, very dumb of me to think of these things but on the other hand these stuff brings some sort of solace to my distraught mind.

Also as I have been learning about myself a lot since I've gotten close to her, I have identified myself being cynical, toxic(we always fight and patch up, not sure if it's toxic I'm still learning), jealous and showing signs of limerence with anxiously attached relationship traits. Crazy package I know but I'm willing to get better and I feel the first step is recognising my bad behaviours. This is why I'm here seeking for opinions to knock some sense into me.

Mine has a few that I can think of but I'm definitely forgetting some:

  • Snig: a secret stash. Usually of cash but it could be chocolate or whatever. Pretty sure this one is unique but I'd love to hear otherwise.
  • Sero: (seero) seriously. This one isn't unique.
  • James floody (flew-dy) ah-doody amen: Weird chant in the hope that something comes true.
  • edit: pinchies: little bit of food before it's ready. Usually meat but as I'm cooking pancakes I just gave some pinchies and it reminded me of this thread

...Because countries are less willing to fight wars due to the possibility of escalating into a nuclear war.

This is a common thing I see repeated throughout the internet. I wonder what's Lemmy's opinion on this.

Sorry if abstract meta questions are not your thing. I find it interesting to discover other perspective views.
I was in the shower with the thought, "Is any narcissist self aware of their narcissism?"
Maybe meta awareness of narcissism is like intelligence, beauty, or hearing one's own voice. We may infer information based upon feedback, but lack an objective frame of reference.

On another level, I am aware of how I am abstract in functional thought, like inferencing across many unrelated spaces, and big-picture meaning. I'm aware of my intuition as it relates to others in general, but I'm not aware of my own beauty or intelligence as it contrasts with others.

Are there universal unknowns? Are we always ungrounded in all self perception; only overconfident in our self asserting narratives? What are your thoughts? Are you intelligently beautiful and teflon to the accusation of narcissism? Perhaps charisma is the ultimate superhero mask.

Videos are kind of rare on Lemmy, and they work quite badly for me at least.

Are there any figures (or is it even possible to know, with the decentralised approach) of ho many there are a day, viewing numbers etc ?

So, I've been on Lemmy since the great Reddit exodus a couple years ago, and back on Reddit though, there were discussions on Data Poisoning, where since it was nigh unto impossible to keep your data private, people would poison their data with all sorts of extraneous information, so companies couldn't tell what data was accurate and what wasn't.

But, here on Lemmy, I haven't seen any discussions about the topic. Are people still poisoning their data? Why haven't I seen any discussions about it? Is it still discussed, just not on the instances I've seen?

It is an abstract question that just crossed my mind after Lady Butterfly's post a few minutes ago in c/mental health.

To be clear, I do not mean whether one should apologise. I do not mean that the act of apologizing has no meaning. I'm specifically asking if the person that expects someone else to apologize is driven by their own narcissism.

I personally place very very little value on words compared to actions. The act of apologizing has a tiny value to me, but the words are nearly meaningless. One is defined by one's actions, not words, and not intentions. I never expect an apology. I want actionable, notable change.

I was physically disabled by a man and most of my life was taken away from me, but I still have no desire to hear some apology. In fact, it would come across as his selfishness for wanting to feel better about the chaos he caused if he tried to apologize. I don't want vengeance. The only apology I would value is some measure of ongoing restitution. Short of such an effort, I would feel insulted by the overture of an apology.

From this perspective, expecting an apology seems narcissistic to me, but I would like to know if you feel differently and are able to articulate a nuanced perspective.

Have a couple of small, shallow ponds at my camp in the boonies. Two dried up the last two years, killing off most of the dragonfly population. (Takes 'em two years underwater to mature.) We no longer have Combat Air Patrol, fine at our house though. So bad out there that bug spray doesn't work even if you bathe in it. Never had issues before. Because I had dragonflies. I'm sure the 10" of snow, in Florida upset things just a tad. Fucking global warming.

Anyway, searched a bit and everyone wants to sell me a bug zapper. A) I don't have power unless I run a genny. B) Those things are indiscriminate and we humans have nuked the insect population as is.

There has to be some way to attract them into a trap. I know they target mammalian CO2 exhalations, and to a lesser extent, warmth. Seems like there should be an easy way to suck the mindless beasts into a black hole. ?
