/c/TenFoward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Well, I don't block every mod simply for being a mod. Just the toxic ones. So you are safe

...for now

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I'll try not to get any toxic Yar Tar on you

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 months ago (1 children)

TIL that Janeway is a mod... (based on the trail of bodies she leaves behind her?)

We are the Borg. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Resistance is futile.

I am the Janeway. I will add your drones to my crew and parts to my ship. Please resist, or else this won't be any fun!? ☺️

I was asked, and I love Trek, and I love Trek memes

[–] [email protected] 36 points 2 months ago (2 children)

My blocklist is crazy long since I block all collaborators and changelings. Also anyone talking like a Romulan or anyone who speaks without honor...straight to the blocklist.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Jolan tru…

…I mean… how about some root beer, it’s deeeelicious!

Just like the Federation!

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Your ears are looking awful pointy wise_pancake...

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 months ago

That’s because I was just practicing an Andorian play pretending to be a Romulan! I’m still in costume you see. A Romulan would never partake in leisure activities with an Andorian, therefore I must be human.

I have to use the lavatory now, but after I come back maybe you would like to discuss your… our plans in the neutral zone?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 months ago

Teft, his block list long.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Reasonable. It lowers the chance of ending up in an argument with someone who will use vindictive mod action as part of their toxic behavior.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Well, you know. In Starfleet, it's usually the admirals who screw things up for everyone else.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 2 months ago

I remember the good old days, when the crazy ones were always commodores.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (6 children)

I have a lot of blocked communities, but only 5 blocked individuals.

Edit: Trump and Elon are filtered as well, as are two instances due to too many trolls and one because I don’t speak their language and they show up too often on /all.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 months ago (4 children)

I have zero blocked anything. Even if people are trolls, it's fun to see what everyone is saying.

I've even had constructive conversation on Hexbear before, I enjoy engaging with people with different opinions to me.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

I blocked a LOT of furry porn but no people

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I blocked a singular bot, lemmy.ml, trump/elon, furry subs (not for me, no hate), and anime subs because they're boring.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

I'm just pleased to see no blahaj's on the list. Cheers!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

I blocked the worst shit stirrers (just the ones calling for defederation with whomever seemingly every week) and my internet drama has gone down significantly. If I want a real chill time, I temporarily block .world. Less content but it gets rid of pretty much all the BS.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

To someone in the know, and who wants that, it's fine, and even enjoyable as you see. Whereas to a day-1 new user, it is far less so, if they wander into the likes of [email protected] (edit: from All, without having read the sidebar text) or Lemmygrad.ml or say something that an admin at Lemmy.ml takes umbrage at, e.g. that Russia is attacking Ukraine, or that Uyghurs are being killed by China, etc.

My beef against it all is that it is opt-out by default, rather than opt-in, and I think it holds the Fediverse back from gaining new users who take one look at it and nope out, possibly never to return. Which since we are declining in number of active users, can be a real problem for us all, as it reduces our availability of content.

But even better than opt-out or opt-in, it would be nice to label it and leave the user to decide what they want to do about it. THAT'S the real problem imho: the lack of transparency as to what it is all about, affecting solely people who don't yet know - i.e. those of us who have climbed the ladder, will we do anything to help others who may follow?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

But even better than opt-out or opt-in, it would be nice to label it and leave the user to decide what they want to do about it.

Yeah. This is the way we need to move toward.

Then each app can ship with it's own default list of wait-for-opt-in to show content, but can all hit the basics like NSFW and NSFL.

I've even had constructive conversation on Hexbear before

I'm guessing you didn't go against the flow?

One time I said it's fucked up that Romani children are taken away from primary school and married off to have children.

Within an hour, I had crazy fucks publicly screaming at me how I'm a nazi and advocating genocide. Meanwhile I was also getting private messages about how they're hoping I would suffer and some shit.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

No I absolutely go against the flow, half of them shit on me and memed on me, and a few shared thoughtfully written messages explaning their point of view. The thoughtful messages are the constructive conversions I've had

I have zero blocked communities, 11 blocked users, and... the entire lemmy.ml instance. :-)

I don't feel like I'm missing anything at all important.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 months ago (1 children)

To be fair, having an instance blocked means you have a lot of communities blocked as well.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (3 children)

Strangely enough, the way that PieFed implements that, in the manner opposite of Lemmy, I see no content from Lemmy.ml users anywhere across all of Lemmy, yet I do oddly have access to those communities still:-). They are not entirely empty, but definitely far more so than the original, having only posts and comments from people on other instances contributing to them:-).

I like this approach much better actually.:-)

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Daym, I need to get some of that pie.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (4 children)

It's not fully ready yet, for someone who does not have an early adopter mindset, but it's coming, and I'm able to use it as my daily driver already (with frequent fall-backs to Lemmy when I need something that PieFed hasn't implemented yet).

I just heard that Andrew got a fork of Thunder working for PieFed. So... that will be helpful to see coming to the main branch at some point:-). ⚡

My block list grew slower once Voyager implemented user tagging. Most of what gets blocked now is porn stuff. I don't mind it existing (and have an account just for that), but there's certain stuff that just isn't my bag, baby.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago (3 children)

I didn't know about tagging until just now. How do you use it? Do you tag profiles so you ignore them instead of blocking?

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Long press a username and select edit tag:

Hopefully I captured both the rage and panda lol.

And yeah, I'll tag people as trolls/agitators, bigots, headline bots (even if there's a real person behind the account), [insert political label here], etc. I'll still block if I feel the need to, but a nice yellow and black "warning" tag lets me know to just not engage, and why.

Edit: you may need to go into settings -> user tags and enable them first.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago

Haha I think you got it 😂 that's a good idea. I normally don't pay too much attention to users, but I should start doing that

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

I figure you are asking about Voyager, but for any Thunder users reading this thread: longpress a comment > user > add user label

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I use Voyager and had no idea.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (2 children)

It's pretty new within past few months, and opt in. So don't feel too bad

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

My grandpa ass (not really old, I just play an old on TV) just figured out how they work and holy shit. What a great feature!

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Thanks! Totally missed that setting.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago

Blocking people who cause you unnecessary grief is always the right move. Their energysuck is not worth it.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'd block myself if I could

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago

I don't want to be a member of any club that would have me

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago

Toxicity is relative. Cutting yourself off from people who are lashing out at others online is understandable... albeit you will be missing out on a lot of what the world has to offer doing that.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I blocked FCC Liquidator Brunt after that last unpleasant exchange. HA!
