Meanwhile On Grad

Documenting hate speech, conspiracy theories, apologia/revisionism, and general tankie behaviour across the fediverse. Memes are welcome!

What is a Tankie?

Alternatively, a detailed blog post about Tankies.

(caution of biased source)

Basic Rules:

Sh.itjust.works Instance rules apply! If you are from other instances, please be mindful of the rules. — Basically, don't be a dick.

Hate-Speech — You should be familiar with this one already; practically all instances have the same rules on hate speech.

Apologia(Using the Modern terminology for Apologia) No Defending, Denying, Justifying, Bolstering, or Differentiating authoritarian acts or endeavours, whether be a Pro-CCP viewpoint, Stalinism, Islamic Terrorism or any variation of Tankie Ideology.

Revisionism — No downplaying or denying atrocities past and present. Calling Tankies shills, foreign/federal agents, or bots also falls under this rule. Extremists exist. They are real. Do not call them shills or fake users as it handwaves their extremism.

Tankies can explain their views but may be criticised or attacked for them. Any slight infraction on the rules above will immediately earn a warning and possibly a ban.

Off-topic Discussion — Do not discuss unrelated topics to the point of derailing the thread. Stay focused on the direct content of the post as opposed to arguing.

You'll be warned if you're violating the instance and community rules. Continuing poor behaviour after being warned will result in a ban or removal of your comments. Bans typically only last 24 hours, but each subsequent infraction will double the amount. Depending on the content, the ban time may be increased. You may request an unban at any time.

I’ve literally seen "but Ukraine has Nazis” before.

Edit. Thanks everyone. I don’t need an explanation. I’m just saying that if I cared to, I could pull those receipts.

[–] possiblylinux127@lemmy.zip 37 points 2 months ago (1 children)

It probably is true. I'm sure there is at least on Nazi in the entirety of Ukraine.

Does that justify invasion? No, not really

If you can identify them, it justifies flying over there to punch them in the face. I'm sure Indiana Jones can find some ancient relic there to justify the trip.

[–] hemko@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

You look at any nation's army and you see a bunch of nationalist assholes there, no exceptions. Some of those are literally neo-nazis. Azov is has pretty high concentration of those, it was a non-government lead army comprised of uktra-nationalists and for sure was problematic as hell.

Ukraine took over Azov when the war escalated in 2022, and they're using Azov as any other battalions in the defence of their country because they need men and these men are willing to give their lives to defend the country, and that's what Ukraine needs right now - without it there would be no Ukraine anymore.

Of course it's easy to yell at Nazi from the safety of your home thousands of kilometres from the country being invaded by an army lead by a shitbag in a bunker, but Ukraine needs every single one of these men to prevent being absorbed into another oblast in the Ruzzian empire. Sometimes bad people end up doing good things

That being said, every Nazi deserves to be fucked in the face with a brick

Sorry for drunk rambling

Can't help but feel the creation of a hard right organisation is a natural out come of an invasion of your territory

[–] chuckleslord@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (2 children)

It's also akin to an invasion of the Bible belt in the US. There were nazis there, that doesn't mean they deserve to be invaded.

[–] Earflap@reddthat.com 7 points 2 months ago

Let's not get ahead of ourselves, now.

The best propaganda uses elements of truth or even wholly true premises. It’s the conclusion that’s wrong (“therefore we should X”).

[–] Snowpix@lemmy.ca 38 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Classic sealion. No matter how much evidence you provide to one of them, they'll find any reason to invalidate or ignore it and continue prodding.

[–] Atomic@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago

Their favorite words used to "debunk" anything you say;

Propaganda, conspiracy, projection.

Anything you say will be one of the three. And everything they say is the real truth.

It's like playing chess with a pigeon. They're just gonna shit on the board, fly away and say they won.

[–] RandomVideos@programming.dev 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Have they been provided any evidence?

The only reply to that comment is someone saying they will give them a link tomorrow

[–] Snowpix@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 months ago

No, because it's not worth the effort of doing so. Sealions like that person only seek to waste your time and aren't there for any actual discussion. You can provide as much evidence as you want, but they'll ignore or attack it and demand more.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 38 points 2 months ago (1 children)
[–] lukewarm_ozone@lemmy.today 4 points 2 months ago

Not a good example. "Defending X" is a much stronger requirement than just "pointing out that a specific argument against X is invalid"; the latter is done by everyone who likes seeing good arguments rather than bad arguments, and isn't a sign of liking X.

(The most pro-russian (as in, supporting the russian-ukraine war) stuff I've seen was various memes from lemmy.ml and lemmygrad that ended up in popular. I'm having trouble finding a better example than that; in particular, because Lemmy's search is bad and doesn't seem to allow for searching recent comments from a specific instance, and also refuses to give me more than a few pages of results.)

[–] Glide@lemmy.ca 31 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Pretty braindead position to take when Yog is posting pro-Russia propaganda memes straight to the front page of memes.ml on the regular.

[–] recreationalcatheter@lemm.ee 12 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Ahhh, yogthos.... he's definitely my least favorite 6-figure earning IT dipshit living in Toronto.

I wonder why he won't move to russia?

[–] Atomic@sh.itjust.works 11 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Or so he claims.

The dude posts and comments like it's his full time job.

Yeah gee I wonder why? I hear Russia is great these days!

[–] recreationalcatheter@lemm.ee 5 points 2 months ago

It's not that his online persona is completely fake and he doesn't have the courage to fight the good fight or whatever else it may be.

Morally compromised inhalant abuser.

[–] JokeDeity@lemm.ee 24 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I used to say it jokingly, but holy shit I really miss the 90s and early 2000s before everything was full of nazis, bots and ads.

[–] LibertyLizard@slrpnk.net 11 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

There were lots of Nazis back then too I’m afraid.

[–] JokeDeity@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yes, but not out in the open, not on every site I visit, not in the literal advertisements being forced on people, not by the president and his minions in broad daylight. No one can seriously pretend things are the same as they were back then.

[–] _cryptagion@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 months ago (2 children)

They are the same. Nazis were killing people here in the US back then too, it was just covered up because it was embarrassing for the local politicians. Sure, it was more comfortable for white people to pretend there was nothing wrong, but that didn't mean people of color weren't dying.

What you're saying is you just want to go back to being comfortable. That's your privilege, you used to be able to pretend it wasn't happening. Some of us never had that option.

[–] JokeDeity@lemm.ee 3 points 2 months ago (2 children)

So tell me what race, gender and religion I am since you know me so well.

They were there then, too. You just didn't know because they were quiet about it.

[–] JokeDeity@lemm.ee 4 points 2 months ago

Which is better. Infinitely better. The fact it's out in the open and no one with any power is doing anything to squelch it is why it's growing so fast. There's no way to assuredly eradicate fascists, but if they're forced to be underground because their idealogies are not tolerated in public spaces, they won't be nearly as able to spread like a plague to every troglodyte stealing oxygen.

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (2 children)

Here ya go, Scruff. By the way, one of the admins there will refuse to answer if they are asked if they support Russia.

[–] Amanduh@lemm.ee 5 points 2 months ago (2 children)

This didn't link me to anything

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Did it take you to lemmy.ml?

[–] Amanduh@lemm.ee 6 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Oh I think i see, by linking directly to ml they're saying you can look anywhere and find that... ok I guess it was a semi woosh in the wrong direction

[–] Rhoeri@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

You’re all good! It was a longshot of a point to make. It’s a bit hard to land those.

I hope someone linked them to some relevant hexbear threads.

[–] recreationalcatheter@lemm.ee 13 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

These cretins can't have an honest discussion if their lives depended on it.

.ml is truly just a self help forum for inhalant abusers.

[–] frezik@midwest.social 10 points 2 months ago

Defending Russia is the most restrictive definition of Tankie.

[–] RandomVideos@programming.dev 8 points 2 months ago (2 children)

For a long while, i havent seen anyone defend Russia on lemmy.

Even if it exists and its easy to find if you have seen it before, that doesnt mean every single person knows about it

Seeing anti-NATO posts and thinking thats what people are referring to when they are saying there are pro-russian posts isnt that unlikely of a scenario

[–] TheFrirish@jlai.lu 12 points 2 months ago (1 children)

With all due respect it's a .ml account that is 1 year and 4 months old as of writting.

Judging by their post history they spend most of their time in political and news on .world now from time to time you will 100% see someone defending Russia there.

just the instance they are on is riddled with tankies it would be highly unlikely.

The comment was made in bad faith or they have a serious case of selective vision. I would bet on the former.

[–] RandomVideos@programming.dev 3 points 2 months ago

This makes the chance that they havent seen any comment or post supporting Russia a lot less likely

But wouldnt it be easier to link to someone defending Russia and then judging by their reply than searching trough their post history?

[–] Atomic@sh.itjust.works 5 points 2 months ago

All you have to do is browse .ml

You know you're at the right place when you start seeing stuff like "occupied korea".

I've seen plenty of people not only defending Russias invasion but justifying it as the right thing to do with claims that they are "de-nazifying" Ukraine.

[–] davidagain@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago (2 children)

Strong "I don't support Trump, I just don't like Harris" vibes here.

[–] finitebanjo@lemmy.world 8 points 2 months ago

"Nothing changes in the middle east, they're both just equally genocidal candidates."

Meanwhile:
Trump: "I think we should just clear out Palestine, force all of them into Egypt and Jordan. Btw did you know those 2000 lbs bombs Israel bought were halted and just sitting in storage? I made sure those got sent out ASAP."

[–] JokeDeity@lemm.ee 2 points 2 months ago

I fucking hate them both... I voted for Harris because she's not literally parroting every word, motion and action from Adolf Hitler.
