What do you mean? Some of them wore pink to protest… Or blue and yellow ties in support of Ukraine… Or held up small signs… If that doesn’t save America, I don’t know what will!

Massive /s

Some democrats were willing to sing with Al Green during the censure hearing. But even so, other Democrats voted to censure Green.

When the ones backing Green sang a protest song after censure there was a counter chorus of republicans demanding Johnson have them dragged them out by security immediately. But they kept singing.

The fascists crumpled and went to recess without motion.

Imagine not just listening to the fascists for once, FFS.

Those 10 democrats absolutely should get a piece of our mind. Call them, email them, the works. But, also, 10 out of over 200 is inconsequential, we hold our politicians to a higher standard, Al got himself removed from congress on a day where Congress took no less than 80 actions on record, and it would have passed regardless.

As a consequentialist I don't blame Al Green but I also don't see his actions being effective or commendable.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

When legislation passing the House hinges on strict party lines with only a couple votes margin of failure, ten members is massive. Al's actions are not consequential because he was left hanging by his party.

Every defecting Democrat empowers the Republicans tiny House majority. Those ten Democrats are effectively auditioning for arguments (bribes) to vote with the GOP. And the party appears perfectly fine with that: further undermining Al Green from behind.

When legislation passing the house is completely dependent on the majority party defecting, ten minority members can be inconsequential.

Actions which inspire matter; even in a corrupt system like this. This was the first time I was inspired by a democrat in a while.

Sanders always inspires, so does not count; and if others are doing stuff it goes unnoticed in my feeds.

So Green did something important, noticed by people, breaking up the ebb and flow of hopelessness

If a lawmaker at a singular event gets into the feed twice it's because it mattered. If it gets into the feed 4 times per day for a week, it's because it's because somebody wants to push a narrative. In the case of Al Green, the narrative is that Dems aren't good enough unless they're getting dragged out of Congress.

You say that like it’s a bad thing. It’s not, because throughout history in the face of bad governance, when normal measures fail. People are expected to make a scene

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago

We need every Democrat present in congress as much as humanly possibly. The margin for error on roll calls is 3 votes. If every Democrat is present and votes against, the Republicans can lose 2 votes and still pass the law.

Making a scene and being removed is not only ineffective, it is counterproductive to protecting American citizens.

It feels more like the punishment was based on the letter next to their name as opposed to the color of their skin, but maybe that’s just me.

[–] [email protected] 68 points 2 weeks ago

Por que no los dos?

[–] [email protected] 34 points 2 weeks ago

The letter is closely associated with the skin color.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 weeks ago

Standing up to power vs standing up for it.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Iirc, the difference was who had control of the House. Both times, the Republicans controlled the House.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

10 democrats joined Republicans in voting for the censure.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago

Vote blue no matter who!

Her name was Jocelyn Wildenstein and she recently passed away (Dec 2024).

I wish The Boondocks were still around. I'd love to hear Riley and Huey's commentary on this.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 weeks ago

I fucking miss that show

[–] [email protected] 29 points 2 weeks ago

This is because he isn’t a republican. If he was a republican it would be fine

The woman who failed to give a hand job in a musical is going to be so proud when she can no longer vote for some reason.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

That's a different one, Boebert, giving handies at all-ages musicals. This one, Green, fucked her CrossFit trainer or something.

Also:

Perjury Trailer Queen > Marjory Taylor Green.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 weeks ago

My apologies, The Debutante Trash all blend together in my head 😔

[–] [email protected] 24 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I was alive and old enough in 2009 to remember when Joe Wilson interrupted Obama's SOTU address by shouting "You Lie!". Pepperidge farm remembers

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

Pepperidge farm is a heavy supporter of Trump, FYI.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago

That blows, welp, fuck IRL Pepperidge Farm

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 weeks ago (3 children)

I definitely didn’t watch it for fear of hearing Trump’s voice, but it seemed like Al Green wouldn’t stop, which was why he was removed. Correct me if in wrong, cause I’m not going to watch it.

[–] [email protected] 47 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

I mean yeah that was the point. He was calling out a dictatorial government for dismantling necessary government programs and institutions that tons of Americans rely on until they removed him from the room. Which is awesome! It's the kind of shit more Democrats should be doing.

Him getting removed isn't the problem, it was the fact that 10 cowards from his own party voted to censure him for it and a bunch of other Dems sat by and did nothing.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago (2 children)

You can blame the ten Dems, but the others definitely took a risk during the censure hearing.

Lashing out indiscriminately doesn't help. It's a lot like "both parties are the same". Following politics takes work, unless you're just in it for the TikTok videos and short bursts of outrage.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 2 weeks ago

Wow, the democrats didn't do enough, Al Green did too much, it's because he's a democrat, etc. It's a wonder why we're not talking about what he was saying.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 weeks ago

Yeah work that almost none of the Democrats are fucking doing!! Politics isn't just voting sometimes you have to get loud, get obstructive, and make yourself fucking known!

This attitude is the reason that the US is going to become the fucking handmaid's tale.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

100% agree, but the post we’re replying to is kinda dumb, then.

[–] [email protected] 19 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

The punishment they're talking about is the censure. Nothing happened when MTG did it but Al Green was censured with members of his own party voting in favour.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

But she didn’t do as much as Al Green. Al Green wouldn’t stop so he had to be removed. MTG said her piece then shut up. I fully support Al Green, just saying this isn’t a valid comparison.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

As if there aren't countless examples of Republicans putting on ridiculous theatrics to disrupt Democratic majority house business without ANY consequences.

The fact remains that when a Democrat stands up and causes he disruption he gets thrown out and censured by members of his own party, but when the Republicans do it nothing happens.

Don't be fucking pedantic, there is absolutely a double standard at play here.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

It isn't being pedantic to call out this specific comparison as being unfair. You can still have your other examples.

This specific one (Green and Green) is what is being discussed. Don't use worse examples when (allegedly) better ones exist.

[–] [email protected] 42 points 2 weeks ago

definitely what happened great watch

if only the other Democrats would follow suit

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago

"But still [he] persisted!"

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 weeks ago (1 children)

I don’t see it for him, but spot on for mtg. He looks like a preacher to me

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 weeks ago

Well the Republican party doesn't have 3rd way and centrist politicians who like to make any excuse to cooperate with the opposition.

3rd way politics is was got us into this mess, and at this point the people who still advocate for "bi-partisanship" are either incredibly stupid or just conservative plants.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 weeks ago

My first thought was in the South Park game how the difficulty slider just changes the skin color
