The Wayne Foundation is a charity organization run by Thomas Wayne and Wayne Enterprises. For a time, Bruce Wayne lived in its office building's penthouse to be closer to the city.

The Wayne Foundation funds medical scientific research and helps people with research by providing facilities and training.

Bruce's first action as head of the Wayne Foundation, was the creation of a new program called "Victims, Inc. Program" (VIP), which would help the victims of crimes who need financial support.

The Martha Wayne Foundation is a patron and supporter of arts, families, education, and tolerance. The foundation supports and helps to run a number of orphanages and free schools, and provides teachers for those who have learning difficulties. Artists can apply for grants from the foundation to help support them in furthering the arts. The foundation sponsors companies like Family Finders. Family Finders is an organization directed at finding lost people and uniting families. The Martha Wayne Foundation also sponsors and runs dozens of soup kitchens within the city.

Isn't it canon in some of the comic books that Gotham is legitimately cursed and it doesn't matter how much charity and good works Wayne does, it's just always going to be bad?

[–] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 28 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

That and also rampant corruption. You can only do so much within the system when the system is rotten.

[–] GregorGizeh@lemmy.zip 12 points 1 week ago (3 children)

Fair, but ultimately also an excuse. He is the batman, he could beat the shit ouf of the entire political establishment and the corrupt big money paying them. Who else if not he, with his super advanced gadgets and tech? He could overcome the security systems and personnel those people employ better than anyone else in Gotham.

You're cutting the head off the hydra at that point.

[–] dragonfucker@lemmy.nz 7 points 1 week ago

Yeah, that's the plot of Batman.

[–] Plastic_Ramses@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Thanks for letting us know you've never read batman?

[–] unemployedclaquer@sopuli.xyz 4 points 1 week ago

Democracy not a thing for ol batman?

[–] hakase@lemm.ee 35 points 1 week ago (2 children)

A post completely misunderstanding Batman on Lemmy? Must be a day that ends in "y".

[–] Lauchs@lemmy.world 8 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I always wonder what social service is going to stop Darkseid etc.

[–] Tar_alcaran@sh.itjust.works 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There are plenty of superpower-through-techology heroes in DC, so a solid public education would probably do it.

If you're working on a "Batman can stop Darkseid alone" theory, then it logically follows that any well-trained and equipped group could also stop Darkseid, probably better than Batman can. So the priority should be that.

[–] Lauchs@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Except in DC most groups can't stop threats like Darkseid. There's a reason the top group is the Justice League and a reason Batman is one of the founding members.

If you're theory held, there should be all sorts of justice leagues etc.

The reason is that Bruce Wayne is hoarding money and resources so others can't do the same as him.

[–] Lauchs@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yes, he is the only billionaire.

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No, but he is one, so by definition he is hoarding money. Being a billionaire more than offsets any other societal good you might be doing.

We don't remember Hitler for his good infrastructure policies either.

[–] Lauchs@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Just to make sure I understand your position... Your theory is that if other people had Bruce Wayne's money, they would spend it on advanced tech, weaponry and simultaneously devote their lives to training in all forms of combat and gymnastics and push themselves past Olympic mastery (as well as all the esoteric knowledge and studying required to become the world's greatest detective) and thus be able to save the universe when asked, despite no one else doing this? Like the only thing stopping people in the D.C universe from becoming Batman is because Bruce Wayne has more money than most people?a

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yes. What separates Bruce Wayne from other people apart from money? I'm not saying everyone would do it, but some people would.

[–] Lauchs@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

What separates Bruce Wayne from other people apart from money?

The willingness to devote their lives to training in all forms of combat and gymnastics and push themselves past Olympic mastery (as well as all the esoteric knowledge and studying required to become the world's greatest detective.)

And here's the thing, if your theory were correct there should be multiple Batmen. It's bizzare to claim that somehow the existence of one billionaire means no one else is able to become one or devote their lives etc.

[–] HK65@sopuli.xyz 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

The military, isn't that what they're for?

[–] Lauchs@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

I'm pretty sure most of the time the Justice League saved the world it's not because they were just giving the military a break.

[–] shadowedcross@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

It's not just Lemmy but Reddit too, I have a feeling it must just be people who have only seen the movies. I'm not sure if the animated shows showed any of his philanthropy, but there are certainly examples of it throughout the comics.

[–] inOut@sh.itjust.works 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Mass murdering, those are responsible for cutting public assistance. Programs is a legitimate superhero power don’t knock it.

If all of the billionaires around me were suddenly murdered, and a respectable public order came to replace them, I would be all for supporting that.
