Please, piss off the supreme court justices even more. Enough to force them to remember their oath of office.
Even Roberts voted Trump should be immune from all crimes he commits. Don’t get your hopes up on this.
The best we can hope for, under the circumstances, is that Roberts comes to deeply regret that decision, as Trump turns on him.
If Roberts decides trump is on track to put Roberts in a prison cell or work camp, Roberts make express some self preservation before he would no longer have the power to, and actually rule on the side of democracy finally fulfilling his role as a check on power of the Executive Branch. Thats the hope.
5-4 instead of 6-3.
They have demonstrated they will overturn themselves based on how they are feeling that day, so I wouldn't rely on getting the same judgement if a similar case comes up and they are pissed at the defendant.
What are they going to do? Sotomayor isn't going to walk down to the oval office with a baton and take trump into custody. An unenforced law is just toilet paper.
Also: They already gave trump the power to get out of anything. Just declare an "official act" to have some navy seals make an opening on the SCOTUS.
Supreme Court is still an important source of perceived legitimacy. The further authoritarians can push the Supreme Court to rubber stamp their power, the weaker public response will be.
Its similar to a form of "divine right" really.
Of course, the Supreme Court has to have its own trust and perceived legitimacy in order to convder it.
Who fucking cares about "perceived legitimacy" when people are just sitting around while the government is dismantled?
Who fucking cares about “perceived legitimacy”
The people that continue to follow laws because they believe the laws are legitimate.
So...
Not the potus. Not musk. Not doge. And not the rest of the fascists.
But hey, we'll all sign a bunch of moveon petitions and express our anger while still tut tutting anyone who defaces a tesla or a target.
Not the potus. Not musk. Not doge. And not the rest of the fascists.
Right, we agree on this.
But hey, we’ll all sign a bunch of moveon petitions and express our anger while still tut tutting anyone who defaces a tesla or a target.
The people you asked "who cares about" are not the people signing petitions or expressing anger. They are the majority of Americans that are clueless to the current events going about their daily lives unaware of what is coming. They continue to follow laws because the system of government mostly has a history of following its laws with each branch of government doing its job. If they believe the laws are still just, and the avenues of appeal still exist, they'll continue to follow the laws.
So if the legitimacy of the Supreme Court evaporates thats a huge deal when the rights to appeal and receive a just verdict under the law evaporates along with it. Its going to be awhile yet, but we're on the path to eventually get to the "pick up that can!" stage and everyone will know that refusing will mean unjust treatment by the state. Thats the extreme end, but by that time everyone will know. I'm hopeful it will be before that point that current events curves toward a different outcome.
"the majority of Americans" already don't give a fuck. They'll just listen to whatever the news tells them (and CNN et al are eager to not piss off trump). If we were actually going to go from 0 to building guillotines at the drop of a hat, wouldn't it have happened when Power of the Purse was completely shat on? Or, you know, the violent insurrection?
PEOPLE will "continue to follow laws" because laws apply to them.
The fascists in charge of the government? They will ignore the laws because they won't be enforced. And then they'll make new laws to suit themselves (see: Attack a Tesla, get sent to gitmo).
You are arguing the exact same fucking idiocy that schumer et al have: "Oh, well, there is a line they won't cross because clearly the republicans are afraid of The American People and our love for decorum. And then we can talk and fix things"
“the majority of Americans” already don’t give a fuck.
Right now, I agree with you on this. I just said the same thing with what you're replying to.
And then they’ll make new laws to suit themselves (see: Attack a Tesla, get sent to gitmo).
I said this too in the post you're replying to. When those in power can make up any law they want at any time and have unjust consequences is when people won't follow the law because its the law anymore. Law will be meaningless by then,
You are arguing the exact same fucking idiocy that schumer et al have
I'm not arguing it. I'm answering the question YOU posed. "Who cares?" I told you who cares. I don't support it or like it, but its what is right now.
Ah. I see. Your entire point is that a completely ineffectual group that will do nothing will be unhappy. So there is absolutely no reason for trump et al to care just like they haven't cared about anything else.
I "love" the "I am technically correct" reddit crowd.
Ah. I see. Your entire point is that a completely ineffectual group that will do nothing will be unhappy.
Not exactly. They're not unhappy yet because they haven't suffered the consequences of trump's actions yet simply because of the inertia of an otherwise functioning government hasn't come to halt yet. However, we are on the path where they will be unhappy eventually and thats when they'll suddenly start to care.
I “love” the “I am technically correct” reddit crowd.
Listen friend, you asked a question and I gave you the benefit of the doubt you were actually interested in an answer because you were clearly upset (rightfully so!) about inaction by the American people. I read your post that you didn't understand why anyone would care about how the Supreme Court was perceived. I couldn't tell if you haven't figured out we're in a bit of an echo chamber here with friends.
Yes, all of us here see the injustice. Yes, all of us here see the government overreach, the graft, the corruption on full public display for any that care to look and see it. Yes, all of us here see the way this is going is getting worse and not better. WE, IN HERE, DO NOT REPRESENT THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS. Most Americans, at this point, don't care. At a future point on this path they will. No, I don't like it either.
If you just want to rage post, I won't stop you, there is a lot to rage about. However, I also don't see any point just saying "yeah that!" to your posts if thats all you're trying to do.
I like how you compare two unrelated groups as of they're equivalent.
The Supreme Court doesn’t have a propaganda machine behind it.
The supreme court doesn't have a police force to enforce their rulings. JD Vance worked that out before the election. It relies upon the Federal government, as an institution, to follow it's will. Then came MAGA and the LOLs will ensure.
Incorrect. The courts can deputize anyone.
They can make a police force.
Edit: Further, the supreme Court has its own marshal service that answers only to them. The courts are capable of enforcing decisions, this is entirely on purpose.
The marshals are unfortunately part of the DoJ and funded by the executive.
Again, different marshals.
The Marshall of the United States Supreme Court only answers to the supreme Court and is not part of DoJ.
Even it true (and I'm sure that you're right), are you seriously telling me that Roberts' ragtag blob of clerks and security guards will overcome Trump's FBI and Federal security apparatus?
Or is your point just a technical correction?
I don't think that deputising a few people is going to disarm Donnie. Especially after their ruling that any "official acts" he makes are legal and legitimate.
No, it won't. But that's the not the point. The point is that the Supreme Court has the power to enforce their decisions if they have to.
In part of the deputization, they can appoint the power to the Marshal of the Supreme court to deputize necessary individuals.
If Roberts does feel the Supreme Court power is threatened he can do something about it. If he doesn't it's an indication he's in agreement with Trump's power.
It largely hasn't been necessary, but it is there.
I believe in theory, they could deputize millions of people.
Correct.
Technically they left it to a lower court to determine what an official act is. Roberts believes that they can rein the king in orange in if he ever steps outside the bounds. He's unaware that Trump can now hire blackwater to murder judges because they gave him complete and total pardon power. He can then replace those judges with cronies. It's almost like these people have lived sheltered lives from cradle to gavel
Don't let his noise confuse you.
Roberts either is on board with this, or Trump is as stupid as he seems.
As is by design over a couple of centuries. Law Enforcement is commonly assumed to be only a power of the Executive, but that is not true. All courts, including the supreme Court have the authority to enforce judgements and use funds allocated to the court to do it.
The question is usually do the courts have jurisdiction to do whatever. The whole point of the Chief Justice is that his jurisdiction is not one of the district courts, but the federal district itself.
This is a constitutional crisis in the aspect that Trump is trying to build support for ending the division of powers. Of course, anyone who knows history will see where this is going, but Roberts knows he is complicit in the outcome, regardless of what happens.
Robert’s enjoying the FO phase
Not until he actually faces some consequences. Otherwise it's just hot air from the king of all gas bags.
Its power games. Everyone is in a mad grab for power and I don't forsee the supreme court undermining their own authority, even for the presidential pumpkin.
🤣 They already bent the knee to Trump, because they thought since he was their guy they'd be at the table.
Of course Trump gives no shits about them and is now steamrolling them.
Fuck Roberts and the illegitimate SC
“These Judges want to assume the Powers of the Presidency, without having to attain 80 Million Votes. They want all of the advantages with none of the risks. Again, a President has to be allowed to act quickly and decisively about such matters as returning murderers, drug lords, rapists, and other such type criminals back to their Homeland, or to other locations that will allow our Country to be SAFE,” Trump said on Truth Social.
Problem is your only "evidence" that the people you are deporting are "murderers, drug lords, rapists, and other such type criminals" is tattoos and a lack of a criminal record.
supreme court and congress better act soon while they have any relevance. A resume being the complacent judge or congressman who let the us system of government fall to totalitarianism is not going to go far or live long. None of them will outlive their usefulness which is almost gone.
Judges need to fucking do something already. This is beyond out of control.
Well that was then.
Judges are political appointees so they deliver a political ruling. Everyone is acting shocked. They've been doing this shit for decades. The only difference is that they've turned it up a couple of notches.
Didn't Justice Samuel Alito fly an upside-down flag outside their home in 2021? He blamed his wife, but it was a clear MAGA bat signal, if there ever was one.
You don't have to have political parties pick your preferred brand of justice. Shocking as that might sound, most other western democracies don't do it.
You cannot undermine the authority of an authoritarian leader. There is only one branch in Trump’s government.
SCOTUS keeps leopards as pets.
You created this monster Roberts. I look forward to your impeachment. Or, more likely, to your acquiescence...
He'll fold like a beach chair. Rather than be humiliated by having their rulings ignored, they'll just agree with the Republicans on everything.
Take the mic away from this lunatic. Never let trump near a mic again. Just shut the fuck up! Enough of this nonsense. Aren't his adult diapers the whole time full?
Sorry, it overcame me for a second there
Was nice knowing ya. You'll post from El Salvador or Guantanamo? /s
Trump is exactly stupid enough to bite the hand that feeds him.
I hope that this would put a few conservative judges into self-preservation and create solidarity with their colleagues, and get them to vote with the liberals on the important issues.
