AI slop and mindless nationalism, what a natural combination

[–] [email protected] 19 points 2 months ago

True maple syrup homies pay Canadian artists.

Really didn’t expect this to be so controversial. It’s just a sticker I made to use as an emoji.

You must be lots of fun at parties. At least you’re true to your name

Your post is:

  • Not interesting

  • Not conducive to discussion

  • Not made by a human

You have made a generic statement with a very generic, generated image. You have not contributed anything to this community.

On top of that, there are valid ethical concerns regarding AI image generation, specifically about the training data being stolen content with no attribution or compensation with no regards for licensing, and the technology being used to put artists out of work in favour of cheap-looking, uncanny valley pictures.

LLMs can be trained ethically (though the vast majority aren't), but it's most likely impossible to ethically train text to image models due to the large amount of data required.

Additionally, commercially run AI models waste an enormous amount of power, and all money invested into these models goes directly into the pockets of American giants and their wealthy owners.

It’s an emoji. Do you feel this strongly about all emojis?

Re-read my reply. Your answer is in there.

If you were to upload an image of one as a standalone post, yes.

If you're not getting paid by the LPC, stop working for free.

? What does this have to do with liberals?

Petition for mods to ban AI-generated images.

This post is void of content.

OK, let's get something straight here: elbows up is originally a hockey term. Normally when you're checking someone, you have to keep your elbows down or else you'll get an elbowing penalty.

Elbows up essentially means "play dirty with intent to injure". If you had your elbows up, you'd have at least one hand on your stick, probably both. So this depiction of flexing arms makes no sense -- you'd never have your arms in that position. Where's their stick, even?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago

Thank you for this explanation. I’ve been wondering for a while

[–] [email protected] 24 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah, no. Elbows up is not a show of strength or a flex. Elbows up means fight dirty, It's not about showing off. Elbows up is about breaking their teeth with an unexpected precise hit. It's dirty It's rotten you take it out You put it away.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I don't understand the posture you're describing. How is it fighting dirty to use your elbows in a fight? Or are you talking about preemptively elbowing somebody in the jaw during a struggle for the puck? Like a sucker punch but with an elbow...?

I thought elbows up was about positioning your elbows to occupy space while digging for the puck in the corner. I don't think it's about fighting dirty but about asserting your entitlement to space. "This puck is mine, you're going to have to go through me to get it" ...but I haven't played hockey in 25 years or so.

It's all a bit moot because if somebody twice your size corners you and demands your lunch money, it's not fighting dirty to use your elbows while trying to get away.

I don't think the graphics are great. I think they get the posture wrong. I think the slogan is more about determination than strength. I don't think Canadians should feel superior to Americans. But also I think it's gross to see someone insisting we ought to feel shame about the suggestion we should protect ourselves.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

I also agree with your interpretation.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 months ago

The pose for elbows up is to put your elbows in front of you. It's a defensive pose for when you know a punch is coming, not for showing off your muscles.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (3 children)

This whole elbows up thing seems very gimmicky. Most of it is based on the dislike of Trump and not pride in our historical achievements. I'm not going to believe these people are patriotic until they start calling for the unboxing of our former Prime Ministers and oppose the renaming of historical parks, universities and roads.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 months ago (2 children)

It’s about standing up when someone picks a fight with you. It’s not turtling or capitulating.

It’s not throwing punches to escalate, it being aggressively defensive though. It we get into a tussle, you’re not coming away unscathed, you’re going to take an elbow to the chin.

Sure it’s about trump. He’s the one attacking, who we have to defend against. I’m guessing you’re not a hockey player. Maybe the context doesn’t make sense to you.

I have no idea what renaming anything would have to do with this concept

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

you dont need to be lecturing on what elbows up means poser

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago

Probably a sock puppet

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm not talking about the terminology which I am quite aware of. I'm talking about a feigned nationalism based primarily around foreign issues with an underlying dependence on US trade.

True patriots and nationalists, and yes there are plenty, don't see this as a fight. They see it as a disappointing loss for the United States. The real "fight" is unfortunately with our own government and their capitulation to a global sense of political subversion that erodes history and establishes ideology as a national identity.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

While I don't disagree with the essence of your point, keep in mind that "no true Scotsman" is a common thought fallacy, in this case, "no true patriot or nationalist". You can't speak for everyone.

Patriotism is a complex topic, but I think we can all agree that, for example, companies weaseling themselves into the Canadian market under the guise of patriotism is not okay. Intention matters.
