Not only is Trump leveling science funding at NASA, like he did with the National Science Foundation, but look closely at the budget. Beginning next year at 800 million and by 2030, 3.5 billion (nearly 20% of its budget), NASA is required to work towards “Commercial Moon and Mars Infrastructure and Transportation”. The ultimate subsidy for the commercial space sector.

They also eliminated STEM engagement program, which provided funding for the next generation of scientists to participate in NASA opportunities. I can’t wait for all this greatness Trump has been preaching to arrive.

So, we all know what's going on here, right? They're gutting any part of our society that relies on intellectual work and trying to compete with motherfucking robots to bring factories back. They want to cram everyone into sweatshops. The plan was never to bring good jobs back, the plan was always live-in factories and suicide nets on the windows.

E: well, at least the Roman space telescope lives on, I guess. I'm unreasonably excited for it; it's already built and just needs to be launched, basically.

The Roman telescope will likely get shoved in storage. I work on it right now, we are talking internally about what this means. Obviously, I have no more information than you do, but the cuts are severe enough that there's no way we will be able to keep working on it at the current levels if this goes through.

FUCK. Wishing you guys all the best!

Bold of you to assume they'll spring for nets.

This is the same vibe as when the CEO gets a million dollar raise but we don't have money for cost of living increases this year.

Sorry USA kids. No astronaut program this summer. Dream smaller this year.

It's okay. Europe and China will replace the US and the world will be better off.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Not sure that's true, but alright

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Not sure about what? The US is certainly getting replaced, and we'll all be better off if the Great Satan isn't the center of scientific progress.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 month ago (3 children)

The great...Satan? ...Wat? Is that Europe orr... China?

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 month ago (1 children)

You must be young. The Iranians and other parts of the middle east have referred to us since at least the 80s, and probably before.

When we brought a bunch of Nazis in after WWII and installed them in positions of importance (like heading NASA by Wernher von Braun) I think we gave them a pretty reasonable argument.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 month ago (3 children)

It's like everyday I learn more and more about how shitty this country's history is.

Because you seem confused, "Satan" here would be America's insane and unstable government body who is openly trying to dismantle scientific and medical research/funding that could improve our futures and the world imho <3

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago (4 children)

I sincerely encourage you to check out documentaties about china that dont start with genocide. You will see that today its used as red scare.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Lol so... you just willfully ignore the shit they do...got it

Fuckin tankies.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

What you're doing is called a strawman.

Of course one should not ignore crimes against humanity. I'm saying we are reducing people, countries and systems based on what agenda we have today.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 month ago (7 children)

Lol no a strawman is presenting a different argument than what's being discussed. I said nothing of the sort and just called you out for your bullshit tankie thoughts. The USA isn't some bastion of freedom, but to act like china or russia is better by ignoring the shit they're currently doing is full on tankie ignorance.

My country is in serious trouble but at least we never ran over protesting college students with tanks and then washed them down the drains.

we’ll all be better off if the Great Satan isn’t the center of scientific progress.

No, I wouldn't be better off living in a country where women are arrested and killed for appearing in public without a silly garment covering their head.

. Europe and China will replace the US and the world will be better off.

Only if China finally gets to choose their own leaders. Until then it is fucked up even worse.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago (8 children)

Hahaha y'all been saying that for a decade already don't you get bored?

China is dying too silly. Their housing bubble is a nightmare, their currency is not desirable and all their factory jobs are going overseas.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago) (8 children)

Their housing bubble is a nightmare

You're saying that as if the US economy hasn't been a fucking bubble bath ever since the stock market got created. Bubbles don't matter apparently, which is stupid but this is the world we live in.

their currency is not desirable

That's the point, they don't want to make their wages incompetitively high by inflating their cost of living and thus nominal wages to the moon like the US.

all their factory jobs are going overseas.

That... is the goal? Factory jobs are low-added-value, you need educated people doing high wage jobs to become a developed country.

I'm not stanning China, there are plenty of shit things aobut the country, but looking from here in Europe, it looks like they are a better partner than the US. Both of them do genocide, have a shitty human rights record, have neocolonial tendencies, shitty worker's rights, no proper democracy, etc.

But China is at least stable as a trading partner.

Shit on China all you want. I know I do. The truth is though the CCP's already sending tons of rovers to the moon to find prime real estate and are heavily investing in reusable rockets like SpaceX. The US is gonna be humiliated when the next humans to return to the moon are Chinese nationals. Can we beat them before that happens? Yes, but we're making all the wrong moves both through government policy and many private space endeavors. Musk's already said he's more interested in Mars for example. The Artemis project keeps suffering severe setbacks due to it being driven by politicians and not NASA.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Nobody will be humiliated. If China gets to the moon first, great. Science is science and the long term experiments that are really worth it take too long for the originators to learn what happened or the winners to outshine anyone. For fuch sakes we are that pale blue dot...even if China gets to one side of the dot, we're still a single tiny ass dot.

I propose that we feed the billionaires to the zoo animals so we can continue to live a decent life.

The Gaza concentration camp nation and the Battle field of Ukraine have to stop. First item is to put put-in a box 6 feet under and fill it with acid so it doesn't come back. Next take all the Israel commanders and give them jail time and executions as necessary. I can't speak for other players in the game but you who don't live here might wanna state it so I can up vote it.

So, Trump wants NASA to get to the Moon and Mars by 2030 while on a slashed budget with limited scientists? Get ready for more spacecraft to drop out of the sky.

[–] [email protected] 43 points 1 month ago

No, Trump does not want NASA to get to the Moon or Mars.

Trump wants NASA to be a tool that funnel money from the government to billionaires, aka Musk and Bezos

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 month ago

Nu-uh magic Musk is going to fix all our problems.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 month ago

Sadly, getting more places with less money is absolutely possible, but the key to making it happen is abandoning planetary science. It’s a shift from a paradigm where engineering exists to support planetary science efforts to engineering for engineering’s sake

Don’t forget that women and marginalized populations are now being discriminated against.

Trump is doing more for the science programs in other nations than those nations ever could.

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 month ago

It's not like American scientists and intellectuals will flee to other nations that value themselves more, crippling US innovation...right?

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 month ago (2 children)

I seriously don't understand why he is doing this. Isn't trump friends with eslong musk? The way i'm seeing this is cutting the budget for nasa would only go against elon. If he wanted to save money, then he should have just cut military spending.

[–] [email protected] 35 points 1 month ago

Trump doesn't want to save money, he wants to reward people who reward him. You can't analyze anything he does in terms of anything he claims to be doing.

Once everyone understands this, his actions make sense.

It also aligns suspiciously well with Putin's goals.

Is NASA a threat to Elon's monopolization of launches?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago

Pretty much, why let the public sector do something when you can funnel government contracts to private industry for kickbacks?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

and we'll call the company, Union Aerospace Corporation
