The tories cut funding from the department that decides whether asylum seekers have their claims granted or denied, so there's a big backlog of people who can't legally get a job to support themselves and can't legally be deported, and feeding and housing them is expensive. The right wing press blames this not on the fact that they're all in legal limbo until the backlog is dealt with, and not on the fact that decades of foreign policy mean that there are lots of people in danger unless they flee who have English as their only extra language, so would only be able to get a job after asylum was granted if they were in the UK, but instead on the myth that the government is required by things like the Human Rights Act to provide people a life of luxury if they come here and people are coming from safe places for a free multi-year holiday. Because humans are not rational, people believe the myth, and if the myth were true, it would obviously be a good idea to stop providing luxury hotel accommodation at great expense to the taxpayer.

I'd have to guess it's to disincentives illegal immigrants coming into the country.

I get the optics of it to be honest. We're constantly being told there's not enough money for essential services, there's housing shortages and so on, but then people can come here and get housed, receive money etc. It's probably also a tough pill to swallow when they're coming from safe countries.

This is absolutely what's driving the popularity of Reform, and will continue to do so.

Presuming you're asking in good faith...

Because working class - read: poor and routinely fucked over - people have been repeatedly lied to that the reason they must remaining living in poverty and dying young is because of people receiving £49.18 per week.

Not the bosses, landlords, or billionaires, to whom 49 quid is a cheap lunch.

I have this meme on hand for when I encounter these types

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

people fleeing horrific situations that you and I can't imagine

I know France is a hole, but I wouldn't go that far.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 23 hours ago (1 children)

I mean, can you blame them?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 22 hours ago

Fed them too much frog legs. They crave the Heinz

[–] [email protected] 8 points 22 hours ago (4 children)

I know you're right, but I'm a working class, poor, and routinely fucked over Brit, but I'm not stupid enough to fall for this nonsense.

Granted I've always thought people trying to get me to believe things that didn't make much sense to me were idiots and disliked them.

They tried to sell me on religion in school, I thought it was a load of rubbish - I remember telling the priest exactly that when I was 11 and he wanted me to do my Holy Communion.

I looked at stuff like the Daily Mirror and thought it was crap, and eventually I got the Internet and started learning more, and it wasn't too hard to use the basic critical thinking skills taught by my parents and teachers to figure rubbish from not.

That said, I'm probably wrong about loads of things and believe all sorts of propaganda and misinformation that I don't realise, but at least the bare faced obvious lies like "It's people seeking political asylum who are the reason the minimum wage is unlovable" are very, painfully obvious to me 😂

...like, it's actually insulting that they would think anyone would be thick enough to fall for that.

I grew up in a dirt poor shit hole council estate in schools constantly in special measures about to be shut down, surrounded my chavs and yobbos in school who literally murdered old ladies in their homes and the like (I'm not exaggerating, sadly), and yet I'm perfectly capable of spotting this rubbish.

I know some people are extremely stupid, but surely it's a small percentage in the grand scheme, so why do so many seemingly smart people fall for this obvious nonsense?

:-(

[–] [email protected] 4 points 10 hours ago

and routinely fucked over Brit

Stop bragging. You will get blamed for your government funded sex life.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 22 hours ago* (last edited 22 hours ago)

I mean, there's a whole bunch of reasons, but I don't think it's simply stupidity.

Some people didn't learn the critical thinking skills you have, some may well have "lost their job to an immigrant" (and not realise that it was actually their boss that fired them because they can exploit someone more vulnerable than them). Some are scared of change, some are suspicious of "outsiders" and haven't actually met any, and when they do realise everyone is just people.

And some are just dirty fucking racists, and they are absolutely stupid.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 22 hours ago

they want to

The priest probably wanted to fuck you in the arse - you dodged a bullet. Well done your young self!

Just to add more context, this is currently the most popular open petition.

This is very disturbing.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 day ago

welcome to the new world, where hating other human beings is government policy.

in the united states this is primarily racist, ignorant conservatives.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

This is what happens when you act civil with the intolerant.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

England is very strongly positioned on the right of the political spectrum. This still seems to surprise people. Brexit, Farage, Reform and Boris Johnson have/had majority support. England is very deeply conservative to the point that the Conservative party isn't even enough for them. Anyone who is surprised by this is basically willfully ignoring news.

Click on the map in that petition. England (outside London) and Wales are deeply red. London, Scotland and Ireland are quite light.

Asylum seekers are a subset of all migrants, but they're all considered "bloody foreigners".

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The guy at work was mentioning immigrants and hotels today, I use him as a baseline as to what the sheep in society are thinking. He's now actually blaming the previous conservative government and labour for the mess we are in., instead of just the labour government. It'll be interesting if I hear about this tomorrow

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Tbf the conservative party held power for over a decade

[–] [email protected] 9 points 23 hours ago

I hate this racist terf island

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 day ago

The billionaires continue to burn our planet down and hog all wealth. Normal people are becoming more scared. And it's much easier to follow the billionaire-owned media and hate your fellow man instead of Luiging those fucking parasites. Sad, but it's very hard to be welcoming when you fear for yourself and your family.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 day ago (2 children)

See the thing is... If we have agreed to host them because they are applying for asylum, and we won't allow them to work, then how ... do these people see them sleeping and eating? Are they going to take them in and feed them?

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 day ago

If we have agreed to host them because they are applying for asylum, and we won't allow them to work, then how ... do these people see them sleeping and eating?

Not advocating for it, but I suspect in the minds of its proponents the other half of this initiatives is refusal to accept any asylum seekers into the country at all.

Either that or they wish asylum seekers to starve to death so they don't come.

Could be wrong, I avoid the Faragists like the plague

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

They don't. These people think that we shouldn't accept any asylum seekers at all and should immediately reject all of the ones currently applying

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago

“Fuck you, I’ve got mine” is why.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

People can be cruel.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

I'm all for this if migrents can get there claim assessed properly and they can then get a working visa. Many whant a job and the ability to chose where they live. Hotels are good for a holiday not forever. But until the immigration office pulls its finger out they are stuck.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago (3 children)

If you don't understand why, you should talk to your fellow country men. I'm not even British and I get it.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 day ago (3 children)

So because the ruling class hoards everything, your solution is taking scraps from people who have even less than you? You know what that makes you? A cunt.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago

He voted for trump, so you know that you're dealing with both a top mind and complete chickenshit.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

In American English, saying “I get it” isn’t the same thing as “I approve of it”. It’s entirely possible to understand a point of view without supporting that point of view. The commenter you’re responding to may not deserve to be called a cunt.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 23 hours ago

A lot of British people are struggling. Why add more?

They're dying of heat. The council can't afford to fix the roads. They can't get a GP appointment. They can't find a job. The factories are gone. Their quality of life is suffering and for what?

Mass immigration doesn't solve anything, not even for the country they come from.

So why do it?

Why are you such a cunt to your own countrymen?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

Yep, lets kick em when theyre down!!!

Rabble rabble rabble!!!

This one has 0 compassion, like a true brit, onl cares about themselves

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Please do explain for us unenlightened plebs.

A lot of British people are struggling. Why make it worse?

They're dying of heat. The council can't afford to fix the roads. They can't get a GP appointment. They can't find a job. The factories are gone. Their quality of life is suffering and for what?

Mass immigration doesn't solve anything, not even for the country they come from.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

But how is any of this the fault of immigrants? My dad wants to kick me out. If I tell the council I'm being made homeless, I will get sent to a hostel in Luton. According to my tory-loving colleague, this is the fault of asylum seekers.

The actual truth is this is the fault of Thatcher and successive governments selling off council homes. Rich foreign scalpers buy up property and sit on it until it makes them money. There are thousands of empty residential properties gathering dust so they can build up in value for these wealthy scalpers. Flats where £200k can buy you a 25% share of a studio is what's shown as affordable housing in London. Housing has become a commodity for the rich to trade and profit off, rather than a human need. I'm working class, on a little above minimum wage and soon losing my job again (because of the council, not immigrants. First job I lost was because of Philip Green and his wife being greedy pigs).

Tell me how immigrants are making my life worse, but the wealthy get a pass. Immigrants are keeping a lot of businesses going (just see the Brexit farm debacle).

So you can look for the easy scapegoat if you want, or you can actually look at what's causing these issues. As People vs Elon showed in their poster, they tell you to blame immigrants so you don't blame billionaires.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 hours ago

I can blame both. The billionaires are the ones inviting them over.

Investors generally rent the properties out. They want to make money on them. The UK birth rate is below replacement. If it wasn't for immigrants, the population would be shrinking. Instead, you guys literally can't build quick enough.

There's only so many GPs in the UK. (There's not a lot of doctors among the immigrants). They can only see so many patients in a day. What y'all've done is overloaded the system.

I can go on, but those are the two easiest ones that come to mind

[–] [email protected] 3 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I think while your frustration is understandable and I feel it too, very much so (though I myself feel it in the overall direction of late stage capitalism in its entirety), in this instance you're confusing people immigrating with those seeking asylum.

The immigration debate is a reasonable one to have, but this particular post is about people fleeing danger, persecution and death, seeking asylum, not those simply wishing to immigrate.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 22 hours ago

If they're seeking asylum, then they need to go to the nearest safe country. Maybe Turkey or Greece. The UK is not close.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Because people are coming over in boats from france and seeking asylum and are draining the system. That's why. To them, they basically see a massive sign saying "free handouts, come on over" and useful idiots are falling for their rouse left, right and centre.

I still think asylum seekers should be given benefits and support.... Just not the ones coming from safe countries like France or Ireland.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 12 hours ago

If you were fleeing war or persecution, would you not prefer to go to a country where you could speak the language and/or had family? Being able to speak the language would also mean you can start working as soon as your claim is processed. Yes, if I was fleeing war, I would want to go to the first safe place. But after safety, the next thing is being able to actually get on with your life and provide for yourself and family.

For instance I can't speak Turkish, I find it a very hard language to learn. So if I could choose between settling there and going somewhere like France, Portugal or Spain where I have some proficiency in the languages, I would try to get there, because I'd be able to get into work a lot quicker and become part of a community if my application got approved. And even more so if I knew people there. It's not a case of being greedy or picky, these people are still humans who need to get on with their lives.

If you just click on the "More details" link your question is answered explicitly:

I believe that such provisions may inadvertently incentivise illegal migration, particularly via the English Channel.
