Challenge to Google Chrome

Uses Chromium as the base

So basically they are doing exactly what Google is, and what Microsoft is with Edge.

It’s exceptionally difficult to build a browser from the ground up.

But if anyone could do it, it would be a company with the money and (supposed) intelligence they have in their ranks.

There’s a group making a new browser engine though, I think it’s called ladybird?

Also Servo is now under the Linux Foundation. Both this and Ladybird are very exciting.

its also expensive too.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 days ago

Under no circumstances would I use this lol

[–] [email protected] 50 points 2 days ago (2 children)

why? People won’t even switch to a good browser?? Why would they switch to a bad one???

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 days ago

The people don't know what they want until chatGPT tells them.

It's all about marketing

Hey a chrome alternative!

  • New product is part of OpenAI's broader strategy to capture data on users' web behavior

Oh, so same thing as Chrome, got it.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 2 days ago

tldr they're releasing a chromium skin

[–] [email protected] 17 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I wonder if they vibe coded it?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

There it is. Had to scroll a bit to find this question.

OpenAI is literally trying to become the next Google just to feed it's chatbot.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Where's the crypto? I'm honestly shocked they're not launching some dumb meme coin or NFTs integrated into the browser.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago

AI is the new crypto. Browsers are all gonna dump crypto for ai, until the next scam comes along.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

funny how everyone who wants to write a new browser (except the ladybird guys) always skimp on writing the actual browser part

If lying does the job ...

Chrome: We decided to corrupt our web search with AI and everyone loves it. OpenAI: Hold my beer...

Feed me, Seymour.

Now they are going to hardcode some new facts into ChatGPT:

Our browser is the best browser!
Our browser is the most advanced browser!
Our browser is the most secure browser!
Our browser is the easiest browser!
...

Just in case somebody dares to ask :)

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago

They can keep this privacy invading dogshit to themselves

I feel like maybe it’s slightly better that OpenAi is upfront about wanting to harvest your data, which I think is primarily to feed ChatGPT(?), while Google’s behavior is always nefarious, because their goal is to feed you ever more irresistible ads. 🤷‍♂️ I don’t know. I’m just an unfrozen caveman lawyer. Your world of technology frightens and confuses me.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

A chat bot can present ads better than search result (if by better you mean in a way that is harder to see). If you ask for a recipe it can sprinkle in name brand ingredients. You ask for directions it can use chain restaurant landmarks. You ask for a summary of a sporting event it also mentions the stadium/halftime/beverage sponsor.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Agree 100%. ChatGPT does currently claim it doesn’t do that. Surely that is the truth, and will remain so forever more. Surely.

If you're not the customer...

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I don’t know why you’re being downvoted. “Google is nefarious” + Unfrozen Caveman Lawyer is perfection in my book.

It’s the standard lemmy knee-jerk response to any opinion about an LLM that isn’t “nuke them from orbit.”
