A one-year-old is dead after being left in a hot car for hours while his mother underwent a cosmetic procedure, police said.

Maya Hernandez, 20, is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter and child cruelty after allegedly leaving her two sons, Amillio Gutierrez, 1, and his two-year-old brother, locked inside a parked car as temperatures soared to 101 degrees in Bakersfield, California on June 29.

People should not be allowed to have kids before 28. I mean there are places that don't allow you to drink before 21 (not that I support it) but yet somehow they think you have sufficient maturity to take care of a baby? Nah...

[–] [email protected] 1 points 22 hours ago

Why didn't they turn down the Sun first?

Some people are just stupid. And stupidity very often correlates with the volume of the artificial lips.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Killing a baby is well beyond fucking stupid. This is fucked up on many levels

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 days ago (1 children)

It wasn't deliberate killing (at least I think so...). Just a stupidity of an enormous scale.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

A lot more than stupidity.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

What else except stupidity?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

Neglect, she knew apparently it wasn't a good idea, yet she still did it. Even just locking her kids in the car for 2.5 hours unattended should be considered neglect, no matter the temperature.

The car was running with the air conditioner on. It automatically turns itself off after one hour in park.

[–] [email protected] 68 points 2 days ago (2 children)

You don't just leave a one and two year old locked in a car unsupervised for two and a half hours, regardless of air conditioning.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You don’t leve children unsupervised at all at that age…

[–] [email protected] 1 points 22 hours ago

You don't levee children...

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

Yep. I agree.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I own the same model of car, and it tells you the car will shut off after an hour. As soon as you open the door, you get a big “car will automatically shut off in one hour” warning and cabin chime. It even pings your phone if you have the app installed.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 2 days ago

That's all good. Still feels like insane behavior for the car to have.

I think this is the classic case of trying to second guess the operator of the vehicle.

Some people were leaving their cars on in their garages accidentally, and having the engine start at some point later. This leads to leaking combustion products into the garage and home.

To fix that, they add an auto shut off that leads to cars unexpectedly turning off.

Hard nut to crack.

While I understand the thought process behind this feature where the car shuts itself off after idling for “too long” the possibly deadly consequences make me question whether it should exist.

(To be clear, what she did was still incredibly stupid whether the feature existed or not and whether she knew about it or not)

[–] [email protected] 20 points 2 days ago (1 children)

You’re right. Nobody reads a car’s manual cover-to-cover. Even if there was a way to disable this feature, she probably wouldn’t have known about it.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago (2 children)

I hate how people are okay with people not reading the manual.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Sure, you've read the manual of every rental car you've ever used. K, buddy.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I’ve only ever rented two cars in my entire life and one of them was the same model as my wife’s. So yes… I have…

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

Well, that's just cheating! Good one though.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Piss off dude. 99% of the time cars are all the fucken same it only gets problematic when some dipshit changes something for no reason that's been the same since the 1970s.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago) (1 children)

Cars are in no way the same as they were in the 70s.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

True. Cars consoles (knowingly here in the US) are non-standard in their layouts. I was one day surprised while riding as passenger in my sister's new 2023 car that she didn't know how to turn on the headlights. The light "switch" was a menu button, to go inside a menu, and a mode needed to be selected. That was one scary day.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 days ago (1 children)

There should not be deadly consequences because you shouldn't be leaving any person or other animal unattended in a car for that long.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 5 hours ago

I have a friend who accidentally killed his much-loved dog because he’d only intended to be gone for five minutes. He ended up getting distracted and was away from the car for over an hour. By then, the dog was dead. That was years ago, but it’ll always be heartbreaking.

[–] [email protected] 30 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The boys’ grandmother, Katie Martinez, is heartbroken.

“They were strapped in their car seats. They couldn’t even get up to save themselves,” she told ABC7. “She literally locked them in their car seats and shut their doors.”

The grandmother will never forgive her (nor should she).

[–] [email protected] 15 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Or the brother, who had to see the little one wither and die for hours in front of him.

I do hope he can forget that experience.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 2 days ago (1 children)

He was two years old, so I doubt he'd understand or retain it in the first place

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

Not true at all.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 days ago

This is the first "mugshot" I've seen of the perp.

She killed one of her kids (and would have killed a second) to get a friggin' anus on her face.

I hope a decent caregiver can be found for the surviving kid. That is, if he's not brain-damaged from the heat and doesn't have to be institutionalized for the rest of his life.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

Those lips looking shit though at least 💩👄

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

Looks like ass.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 days ago (1 children)

“…notes that the boys’ father is currently incarcerated.”

Shocked I tell ya. Shocked.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Who knows the reason... Maybe he tried to kick in some adequacy in her head.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Or kicking the "adequacy" into her head is what killed the last 2 brain cells she had.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

Who knows? At least I'm surely not interested in the story enough to search what the situation was.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago

Natural selection still exists and nothing stopping stupid people from creating life. In fact it’s encouraged.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago (1 children)

rage bait article. whhaaat? an individual did a fucked up thing?! better write an international news article about it!

[–] [email protected] 14 points 2 days ago

Reporting on this can possibly save the next kid.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

WARNING! The article is very necessarily descriptive.
