This isn't minimalism, this is enshittification.

What's a SKU? Google just says "Stock Keeping Unit", but I don't think that's correct in this context.

I looked into it, but it covers a different use case. It's based on photogrammetry. For reverse engineering, you always need at least one measurement to scale the mesh. Also, you cannot scan anything bigger than the enclosed space within the scanner.

The einstar actually measures depth, so I can get measurements even if I scan the object from just one side. It stitches the measured points together by overlapping features, so it theoretically can scan infinitely large objects.

A big reason why I wanted an All-in-one 3D scanner was because I want to reverse engineer objects I see "in the wild" and in museums. The staff there might not appreciate it when I put a ruler on their stuff.

So, I bought a 3D-scanner. I needed one that works without a PC, and the only ones currently on the market seem to be the Revopoint Miraco Pro and the Shining3D Einstar Vega. There have been mixed reviews about the Miraco, and Revopoint apparently had a history of abandoning older models. Shining3D also makes professional-level scanners that cost as much as a car, so I banked on them putting some of that expertise into their consumer models and went with the Einstar.

Well, it works fantastic and so far does everything I bought it for...

BUT This thing is so closed off it makes Apple seem like a posterboy of the open-source movement. You cant even get any data off the device, unless you connect it to their proprietary "StarVision" PC-Software. It doesnt have a SD-Card and doesnt register as a mass storage device like most cameras do. When you connect with StarVision to the Vega, it asks you on device to login to your Shining3D account (and to connect to your WIFI beforehand). If you click "cancel", it simply disconnects from your PC.

So, without an account and WIFI, the Vega is just a brick. At least all processing is offline, and it doesnt force my data into their cloud (so far).

The BBC study suggests that, "given that most devices still use LCDs, where power consumption may not be reduced by displaying darker colours" (British spelling theirs), broad claims about energy savings may not be appropriately scaled.

Yeah, no shit.

Yes. Isglitch.com is a satire site.

You can pull the film to ISO 400. Make sure you can find times for your developer.

"Bärendienst", as in "A well meaning action that has unintended negative consequences"?

You have Trump now. It'd be our turn to make jokes, if we had any humour.

By withholding funding to schools and colleges who allow transgender students to participate in women's sports.

Unsurprisingly, its Chimpanzees. I've once read about a case where researchers studied a certain group of chimps, and observed that from time to time a young would disappear from the group, never to be seen again. Turns out an older female was luring them away from the group and murdered them. Apparently, there is a non-interference rule in wildlife research, so this went on until the group simply died out, because every single young fell victim to the serial killer.

Yeah, everybody is making jokes about cooking with blood in this thread, but they're really just describing German cuisine. I remember eating blood gruel with potatoes and spinach as a kid. Tastes awful.

Hi! Here is my "cheater" build for the Fractal Terra case:

https://pxscdn.com/public/m/_v2/632520794410387667/758e75a50-ddd61a/55OxYLiBWoda/v3JXJduBkhRJcao0yHSUZukaL0kKqRUgWRG41L7V.jpg https://pxscdn.com/public/m/_v2/632520794410387667/758e75a50-ddd61a/v7zlLq6Vf5oa/BD5cw2xpm4ddjYdpyfbeHyxoTD6dLYpB4W82bXP3.jpg

Components
Case: Fractal Design Terra
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800x3d
GPU: RTX4080SUPER with Bykski water block
PSU: Corsair SF1000, 1kW
Mainboard: Asus Rog Strix B650E-I Gaming Wifi
Sound Card: ESI MAYA44ex
External Cooler: Mo-Ra IV 400

I designed and 3d printed a carrier for the sound card, which is now piggybacking on the water block of the GPU. It is connected to the Mainboard via a M.2 breakout cable and M.2 to PCIe-adapter. I get 1ms latency in Guitar Rig 7.

The water cooler is controlled and powered by the mainboard via a breakout module, which connects to the PSU and the pwm outputs of the cpu fan and aio connectors on the mainboard.

The whole setup is entirely inaudible even under full load (like rendering in Blender3d).

Edit: corrected a typo: it's a 4080Super, not a 5080

What do you think? Do you see any bottlenecks or budget balancing issues? I need it for CAD/CAM, 3D modelling, gaming (Cyberpunk, Witcher3 with raytracing, BG3)

The site says the cooler is not compatible, but according to noctua it is, if I mount the radiator underneath the cooling block.

Is the mainboard ok? I don't see the benefits of the more expensive ones. All they have is PCI 5.0, which the GPU doesn't utilise, and the riser card for the Terra is also only PCI 4.0

Most parts are cnc-carved. The body is usually carved from a single block of wood, but for my cnc, I split it into three parts, including a decorative strip of amaranth.

Vibrating string length 29.5cm (3/4 violin). Strings are Aquila F-Red superior tension, G-D-A.

Materials used: maple, spruce, amaranth, ebony.

I have a workpiece that I want to give an oil finish, but a certain area needs to stay oil-free, because I need to attach a part later on using hide glue. What masking method is safe for oil?

"Adapt Sound" basically does a hearing test and then automatically equalizes your headphones or speakers accordingly. I have a hearing impairment and need this feature.

I need to drill holes at exact positions to affix large workpieces to my cnc for two-sided machining. My drill press is not large enough to reach all drilling positions, and drilling by hand often results in a non-90° angle. I know for metalworking there are magnet drill presses to drill holes in steel beams. But is there something similar for wood?

Just a test for my new CNC machine. I got the file from here: Scantheworld and turned it into a relief using ZBrush and Photoshop. The wood I used is cherry and the sice of the carving is roughly 60x50mm.

I had booked a ticket for their Berlin concert this friday, but today I got this in the mail:

“Due to the unexpected overlap of dates related to the new production in which Percival takes part, we regret to announce the cancellation of the concerts. The Percival band is bound by an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) and we are unable to provide further details.”

Do you think this "new production" is The Witcher 4?
