Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Posting Guidelines

All posts should follow this basic structure:

  1. Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?
  2. What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?
  3. Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).
  4. Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).
  5. Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Rules

Expect to receive feedback about your posts, they might even be negative.

Make sure you follow this instance's code of conduct. In other words we won't allow bellyaching about being sanctioned for hate speech or bigotry.

So, I made a comment on the 'two goobers' community of lemm.ee, moderated by Bubs.

I gave a rather cynical, but nonetheless accurate imo description of a particular comic, explaining that it showed an overly lovey dubby relationship that was likely doomed to failure.

Made some more comments explaining my reasoning, ended up getting into some arguments as two users seemed genuinely sceptical, and one of them very defensive, about the idea that CPTSD is usually caused by abusive narcissists when it isn't caused by ongoing, severe material deprivation, such as being very poor, homeless, or living in a war zone.

As of time of writing this, my first comment was the most popular in the thread, something like 45 up, 5 down, and I have been banned from the community, almost the entire comment chain has been nuked, no explanation has been seemingly given for the deletion of any comments, unless my view or understanding of modlogs is somehow borked, though I am apparently banned (indefinitely?) for Rule 1: No Abusive Language.

I can maybe see how a few of the latter comments could veer into being interpreted as 'abusive language'.

Maybe.

... But the entire comment chain?

The two I was arguing with used language about the same level of 'abusive' as myself.

They don't appear to be banned though, just had their comments removed.

... I ... don't really care about being banned from an apparent hugbox community that has a single mod, but just from a point of ... attempting some kind of professionalism, maybe Bubs could have just deleted the specific comments they found to be 'abusive', sent all involved a clarifying DM about that, not just jump straight to a ban?

I dunno.

I hereby submit this to the tribunal for public commentary.

Here's the link to lemm.ee's modlog

EDIT: It looks like a whole bunch of at least my removed comments are not even showing up in the modlog.

I... don't know if thats because of some technical issue?

I had a bit of a tit for tat with both Ocultoconoclast and Count Regal Inkwell, and you can see their removed comments in the mod log, but my one for one responses are not even showing up as removed in the lemm.ee modlog, though they are all removed/'deleted by moderator' when I go through my own comment history.

https://lemmy.world/comment/15319695

I'm guessing they did this because my comment didn't have the correct positive vibes for them on their post when they're the moderator.

It's funny because 196 and almost all of its derivatives are rightfully anti-tankie because tankies promote centrism and conservatism directly harmful to trans and gay rights.

Also offensive: pointing out that English speakers do not use the word "American" to refer to people from Latin America. The term in our language is universally used to refer to people from the country America.

Which mods/admins were being Power Tripping Bastards?

A mod from World [email protected].

What sanction did they impose (e.g. community ban, instance ban, removed comment)?

I had my comment removed and received a one-day ban.

Provide a screenshot of the relevant modlog entry (don’t de-obfuscate mod names).

Provide a screenshot and explanation of the cause of the sanction (e.g. the post/comment that was removed, or got you banned).

Original post: Pope is in ‘critical’ condition after suffering ‘asthmatic respiratory crisis,’ Vatican says

Like many of us on Lemmy, I think the Catholic church is responsible for a lot of evil in the world, including the way they were/are directly involved in blocking access to contraception leading to the needless death of millions of Africans due to the AIDs epidemic, the endless cases of child sex abuse, along with the ongoing coverups, and honestly too many awful things to mention in detail here.

So I left a comment that said:

The Catholic church at this point has all the moral authority of a child sex cult.

Explain why you think its unfair and how you would like the situation to be remedied.

Amend community rule 4 to remove the reference to religion. WTF is it doing there as a rule in a news community in the first place? Is LW being run as a theocracy now?

Rule 4: Posts or comments that are homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, ~~anti-religious,~~ or ableist will be removed. “Ironic” prejudice is just prejudiced.

The mod in question is also ~~a~~ religious ~~weirdo~~ (see below during a discussion about Luigi), so perhaps that is why they have the rule in place. But if that community not going to accept fair criticism of religion then it isn't a serious news community imo.

I fully acknowledge it wasn't a long ban and the rule was in place, so it was perhaps a BPR or YDI in that sense. But the rule shouldn't be there in the first place. How on earth is it justified? And looking at the other votes and comments on that post, it's clear that the the vast majority of folks hate the Catholics church as much as I do. So why is this mod running defence for the famously morally bankrupt Catholic church in a world news community?

Summary:

  • @[email protected] was posting at a high volume to [email protected]
  • there is no written rule on [email protected] about post volume
  • there is no written rule on ponder.cat about post volume
  • !news is the one single community Cat was this active in
  • !news has no ponder.cat mods
  • from my understanding, all rules Cat did break were unrelated to volume (correct me if I am wrong)
  • ponder.cat admin @[email protected] reaches out to Cat via comment and then DM essentially threatening account deletion if Cat doesn’t lower their activity level
  • Cat understandably deletes their account because who wants that

Of course, PhilipTheBucket had the right to do this, but I also think it’s exceedingly bad form and people have a right to know that this admin is willing to go above the community mods’ head like that.

Internet etiquette has dictates for dealing with undesirable yet not rule-breaking behavior that was just ignored here. Communication should be chosen before simple fist waving and threats.

I agree with this comment that this is a bait-provoked reaction. Next time I recommend:

  • at the instance/admin level, the creation of instance rules about volume
  • at the community level, advocacy for community rules about volume (i.e. “[Meta] Petition: Limit daily submissions to !news to ensure community quality”)
  • avoid personal slapfights to get your way
  • avoid escalation directly to account termination threats

This one is both upsetting and weird.

So there was a user on ponder.cat who's been spamming posts. Like a lot. 58 per day, on average. Not 58 comments. 58 posts.

I started seeing a little scattering of reports about it, mostly just figured it was the mods' business to deal with, and then finally today I actually really took a look at what they were doing and realized it was way over the top. Pretty much everyone in the comments agreed when someone brought it up.

A 25 day old account with 1,400+ posts? What the actual fuck? My entire goddamn feed is this one account...

Touch grass. Good lord. You're carpet bombing multiple communities with repeats of the same crap.

The user was not receptive.

lol.

I guess people here do not know how to block an account.

:)

Is that a compliment or a rant?

May I introduce you to Lemmy block function.

If you don’t like my posts then block me and you will never see them again. As simple as that.

That's a bunch of bullshit. The voting was about as you would expect. I said to the user:

That's not how it works. If you're interfering with the average Lemmy user's experience, you don't get to claim it doesn't count because each individual person would be able to block each individual problematic account, if they wanted to have a good experience. Honestly, these people have a point. You have been posting an average of 58 posts per day. That's too much. I post a ton, and that's about 10 times more than me, and I've gotten multiple complaints about posting too much in particular communities. The handful of times it's happened, my reaction was "Oh my bad what sounds like an acceptable level" and then to more or less stick to an acceptable level. Getting snarky with people who are asking you to cool it is very bad. Please stop posting so much. Anything about 10-15 posts per day starts to feel really excessive to me. Definitely don't be dismissive about people's complaints to you about it.

They rejected my suggestion, so I sent them a DM that was a little more direct about it: Stop doing this if you want to keep your account on my instance.

Then, for some reason, they deleted their account on their own.

Well, that was weird, but at least it's all resolved and we can all get back to what we were doing. Or wait... what's happening now?

I wasn't expecting "making sure we make a safe space for the spammers by banning people who complain about spam" to be an important moderation duty, but I guess in the bizarro world that is [email protected] moderation philosophy, it makes perfect sense.

Admin comments on lemm.ee: https://lemm.ee/post/55846636/18367529

tl;dr for lemm.ee:

In short, somebody posted a pro-Elon-Musk-doing-a-nazi-salute Valentine's Day meme and the mods left it up so people started complaining in other communities and the admins realized "you know, we never see reports from our instance's most controversial community" because the mods were quick to act leaving everything up. So the original salute poster was banned and all the mods were dethroned as the admins are taking a wait-and-see approach on what to do with the community.

I haven't found a comment about what happened at .world yet but there are zero mods for their community too.

Power tripping mods getting their comeuppance!

I don't even know what to think about this one. I'm not angry, more confused than anything. There's only one mod there so i asked them, and they said "It's against policy. It's the abbreviations policy."

I see no such policy anywhere, so who knows what's going on. Is it only the NYT that can't be abbreviated? What about the US? Is LOL forbidden too? And if so, why are we forbidden from laughing there!

They didn't even remove the comment.
The mod is user qrstuv. Maybe the only abbreviation allowed is when they say one? That's a power trip!

Not really "powertripping". Just pathetic. Consider this a notice to avoid feddit.org... I've unsubbed and blocked the instance.

We can't dehumanize fascists for their choice to dehumanize everyone for things outside their control though, because that would be mean, and hurt their sociopath feefees!

Europe stool idly by throughout the 1930's "tolerating" fascism, and the Nazi's killed over 100 million people. Don't make the same mistake as the radical centrists of history. Fascists will not afford you the same tolerance or courtesy.

okay listen up because i am telling you something

my excellent post got removed with no reason given so that has to be a mistake right i mean it was a relevant popculture post in the popculture community look i even asked two authorities on the matter and they said it would be okay

now heres the thing

im worried jeff wants me dead and what if im wrong and what if unruffled and iii are deepstate agents who played a trick on me and i get banned over this excellent post that would make jeff a power trippin bastard can you believe it just look at what this sick bastard has said in the past

1000008482

clearly lusting for violence and blatantly admitting to participating in disinformation campaigns against his own users

so if jeff wakes up and removes my post please avenge me we cant let them just bulldoze us like this we have to stand up and fight for the truth we have to fight for ourselves and for each other and most of all we have to fight for our rights to post in other peoples communities and not be banned

no downvoting this post all downvoters will be banned from my community

likely in response to my comments on the beehaw post, which i linked to (hopefully im doing this right?). apparently, calling people you dont know for the first time "they/them" before being told their pronouns is "misgendering". absurd. this kind of attitude threatens the larger LGBTQ community and is partially why cishets hate us after we won so much progress back in the 00s and 10s.

im a queer person. im neurodivergent. this shit is so goddamn fucking annoying, especially as an older queer who got physically assaulted on a near daily basis for being queer in the 90s. the kids today get their panties in a twist over being supposedly "misgendered" by someone calling them gender neutral pronouns before being corrected. narcissistic victimhood bullshit.

anyways, now banned from one of my favorite instances. meanwhile in the US theyre planning on hunting us. but yeah, lets ban fellow queers over their view that people who get mad about being "misgendered" when they arent (cis people are also referred to as "they/them" before further context in a conversation with a stranger) are just attention seeking brats that threaten the larger movement. its so obvious to me that the brats who find reason to be offended over innocent pronoun use never faced real adversity, like getting repeatedly physically beaten.

edit - the best part of all of this is i faced no moderation from beehaw and all of my comments are +1 or higher. power tripping oversensitive neurodivergent hating bastard of a mod over at blahaj IMO.

edit 2 - did this wrong. heres a link to the post i think got me banned from blahaj and a screenshot about it https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/post/37659465

Edit 3 - apparently I did nothing wrong until I made my thoughts known about how the pronoun police fucked over the larger LGBTQ community as our rights are backsliding in America. Yall are gonna whine about being misgendered to the concentration camp guards at the rate we’re going. God forbid I be angry that while queers were busy fighting over pronouns our adversaries stuffed the courts, stuffed the school boards, couped the government, and are installing a fascist dictatorship. When I say that these fucking toddlers are going to learn what real oppression tastes like, that’s what I mean. It’s not that I want us to be hurt or oppressed (as the dog piling idiots have interpreted), it’s that the younger generation is weak as hell and lost the fucking plot in the fight for our rights. I grew up getting beaten in the streets for being queer only for these kids to claim their pronouns not being mind-read is oppression!

So, I saw a report from one of my users. They reported:

https://ponder.cat/post/1594852/1813842

For the reason:

Unreasonable fighting with everyone in every simple post

I think that's ridiculous, so I talked with them about it. Posting private communications is frowned upon I guess, but long story short, they weren't receptive. I've decided to ban the account.

IMO the general culture on Lemmy is that users are entitled to their free account and everyone needs to be careful and circumspect about limiting that entitlement in any way, but I don't see it that way. I don't think it's a requirement for me to provide hosting space for anyone who wants to use my stuff as a jumping-off point for abuse of Lemmy's systems, and isn't apologetic or receptive when I talk with them about not doing that. The fact that it's in service of harassing FlyingSquid in particular is just icing on the cake, since my perception is that people like to harass him apparently for no legitimate reason at all (with this as an example).

AITA?

I don't troll. At all. What I do is post various comments encouraging a community to not get angry as hell about a change but to make the best out of it. That's what happened when 196 decided to port over from blahaj.zone to lemmy.world. I made a bunch of fairly long comments that were talking about how people shouldn't be angry and just leaving toxic comments but fueling a better community, whether that be here or elsewhere. Comments went fairly well and all was fine and left up for a while but a couple of days after being posted they were removed along with everything else that I had posted to that community. The mods list the reason in the modlog for my permanent ban as "trolling". There are many things I do, but trolling isn't one of them. Especially when the comment sections are left in a state here showing that I wasn't trolling.

I went through everything that I did with that community and cannot find a singular thing with the exception of a memory.

I had posted a meme a couple of weeks ago. I don't remember exactly what it was but I remember a moderator saying on it an hour or two after posting that it should be marked as NSFW. I disagreed with this assessment. I left a comment in response saying that I disagreed that it should be marked and that I would refuse to mark it as NSFW. However, I also respect that it is their community and their rules so I settled for something different. I didn't add an NSFW tag, I just deleted it wholesale. I didn't want to add a tag to something that I didn't feel was applicable and instead of having to sit with that tag on the post, I just deleted the post entirely.

So this only leaves two options from the mods of 196.

Either they banned me for posting comments that were supportive of the community itself and not directly supportive of them or they banned me for deleting a post.

In either case? The moderators of [email protected] are no better than reddit moderators who just lash out for their own ego. Blanket bans for disagreements.

And perhaps unsurprisingly and perfectly fitting of every single accusation that has been levied so far against them and their abusive practices, the last moderator to interact with me was @[email protected].

I find it fucking hysterical how the mods over there are so vehemently Anti-Trump (and should be given the userbase and content) but act no better than someone in his administration.

Edit: I found the post about it being NSFW after going through Moss' profile but unsurprisingly Moss had to go ahead and suppress my comment there as well. It's remarkable how much of their profile is just whining about being treated unfairly while they're going ahead and treating people unfairly. But of course, Moss (being a redditor) had to go ahead and downvote before the removal of the post. Fragile... jesus.

As for how I feel it should be remedied, Moss should step down or at least be removed as a mod on Lemmy.world. They've done nothing for the community that hasn't been insanely divisive as of late. They seem to be remarkably tonedeaf and just openly abusing their position.

Update

@[email protected] went to the community and straight up asked why I was banned. For the record I didn't ask for this or anything and was completely blindsided when I got a notification in my inbox. But a mod over there did respond with this:

So I'm unbanned from the community because a mod could find no reason that made sense why I was banned.

Tell me how that doesn't unilaterally prove that Moss was indeed just banning people over petty ass reasons?

Reported less than five of this dipshit's posts and he ended up banning me from all of his communities. Doesn't really surprise me. I've known that reports on Lemmy are faulty and Admin only reports, or more control of who receives them has been suggested but Lemmy's devs never listen.

My advice is to just send messages directly to your Admins as well as his admins, then he can't intercept them.

Hi all.

First, thanks for reading. I'm not exactly sure if this is the correct location to raise a concern about a ban/deletion, but I guess it's as good as any.

So:

  1. I dont know which mod it was. Log is redacted?
  2. post deleted & banned from the [email protected] community
  3. screenshot of modlog attached
  4. screenshot of comment attached.
  5. It was an appreciated post with 106 upvotes 26 downvotes at deletion and several positive responses yesterday. When I came back today (I'm in Australia so timezones..) the comment was deleted and I was banned - and several negative comments have appeared which I would have liked to respond to.

Original post: a news article about Proton Mail.

My post: Essentially I took the time to read the article and included the quotes of what was written by the CEO that was being discussed in the article - as many in the comments had surprised me by jumping straight to him being a literal Nazi. As not a single other commenter had included the quotes to discuss the source, I thought that would be a valuable contribution. I also gave my opinions which you can see in the comment on the modlog, the formatting is messed up so I included a screenshot of the (recreated) comment. https://lemmy.world/modlog/1347

What I didn't notice was that the article writer had omitted the first part of the Twitter post from the CEO in her quotation of him - so I quoted her, and in doing so missed the context that the CEO had actually started "Great pick by @realDonaldTrump" at the start - which does of course change the context of his Twitter post to praise. This was clarified for me in the angry responses. I would have edited my comment and owned my mistake, however stood by the rest of the comment regarding Proton's official follow-up.

So, is that deletion and ban fair?

Update 10 hours later: contacted a mod directly to see if i can find out more about the ban or perhaps get it remedied.

Update 48 hours later: contacted the entire mod team, and got back feedback from several of them - all helpful. My post has now been undeleted, and my account unbanned from the News community 👍

Context: https://lemmy.world/comment/14613536 Screenshotted context just in case:

A user claims that the killing in Palestine stopped under Biden now. I point out that biden had full-throatedly supported the genocide for over a year. A mod deletes my post and says that biden didn't "state" (keyword here) full-throated support for genocide.

I counter by saying I consider sending billions in support of genocide counts as full-throated support for genocide. I also point out that I didn't say Biden stated his support for genocide and that he didn't need to outright state it because actions speak louder than words.

I receive a temp ban for that counter and the mod adds a response where they claim the weapons were "provided for defense from Iran, full stop." which sounds to me like actual misinformation because how the hell does bombing hospitals in Gaza defend Israel from Iran? I'm not bothered by their stupid opinion, but I am bothered that they are enforcing it through moderation.

I ran into a similar moderation problem on the Political Memes community also on .world, but I didn't bother making a post here for that because that's just a dumb meme community and I was better off just blocking it, but now this is concerning a world news community and it's awful to see something like this happening in a community that's supposed to keep people aware of the news.

But hey, maybe I'm wrong and it actually is misinformation to say it's full-throated support of genocide to send billions in weapons to a country using those weapons to commit genocide. Please let me know what you think!

I don't expect this to play particularly well here, and maybe I'm just being conspiratorial, but here goes:

I banned [email protected] from [email protected] earlier today- he literally posted a matt walsh youtube link and was being otherwise transphobic in a space where that gets you banned. (link)

one of jordanlunds removed comments w/ matt walsh video:

spoiler

the reason I put down was 'trolling about neopronouns' I stand by that, it was violating instance rules and was unacceptable behavior from a moderator of another instance.

Shortly after that I got banned from [email protected] for 'trolling'. To be clear, jordanlund does not moderate [email protected], but the timing struck me as an odd coincidence.

The .world thread in question (link)

I was expressing my actual opinion/position on this, if anything the post I was replying to should be considered a rule 1 violation implying leftists are russian/under russian sway:

spoiler

The removed comments that I was banned (permanent) for were just me being earnest about my position, which you're welcome to disagree with.

I don't view protecting my rights as something worth sacrificing other people for, even if they're on the other side of the planet. You can be mad at me or hate me for that, but I'm not trolling.

People replying felt it was reasonable to call me an idiot for example, yet another example of selective moderation. on .world.

I don't have any conclusive proof that my banning Jordanlund and then getting banned are related other than the suspicious timing, I welcome clarification.

Anyway in the interest of neutrality and transparency I submit both my ban and jordanlunds for review.
