Definitely earned it, we're already seeing a wave of indie games trying to capitalize on it's success.

Some games have a major impact on the game market by creating or popularizing a subgenre. Some previous examples are Slay the Spire, Stardew Valley, and Vampire Survivors. I think Balatro will be the same, and we'll see a huge number of games over the upcoming years trying to follow in it's footsteps.

Balatro is addicting and well conceived. I actually think it's a great phone game, and I don't think I'll play it on PC really at all. I'm not sure I'd give it GOTY, but if you've been on the fence about this one, I recommend you give it a shot. The dev deserves every penny of the full price.

The Cryptid mod is pretty much the only reason I play on PC.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Looks like they don't like custom ROMs. shrug too bad for them I guess.

You can convert your desktop copy to an apk with https://github.com/PGgamer2/balatro-mobile-builder

Fuck Balatro who play that shitty(addictive) game. Hmm Whatever come join us at [email protected]

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Arguably appropriate with its success and the already burgeoning influence in new games. I loved the demo at next fest, played for hours and knew it was an instant buy. And I loved the full game, for about 5 hours. Once you realize that it really is just a restart simulator due to literally unwinnable seeds, the illusion breaks, or did for me. As a roguelite fan, I also didn’t enjoy the lack of run shaping tools and abundance of bloat jokers that only got worse as you won more. Very addictive and solid game, but I don’t think I’ve ever experienced a “bait and switch” from demo to 1.0 quite like it.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

You probably just need to get good. Iirc Balatro university said that about 80% of seeds are winnable on gold stake.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago (2 children)

That means that roughly 20% arent. That's 1 in 5, and that's pretty ridiculous.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

But hardly a restart simulator. That's 4 good 2hr+ runs to one unavoidable 15 minute restart (or more likely you losing). That's a great rate. And as the person above you was pointing out, it's not that you get a string of unwinnable seeds, you just aren't good enough at the game yet. If you don't enjoy losing and retrying with better knowledge and being better at the game then rogue-likes just aren't for you and that's fine.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago

Only thing is, it’s not about getting good, or wasn’t for me. Once that info came out, the illusion is shattered. In other roguelites I play, I always knew or thought I had a chance to an extent. Learning there even exist unwinnable seeds just killed my drive to play is all. It’s not about getting good for me. The game part went away when I learned that. Add that on top of the other issues that decreased my fun and it was a wrap for me.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

On gold stake though. If you just want to try different wacky strategies, don't select mac difficulty.

Agree there should be more knobs to tweak a run for the hardcore folks (I am not one of them).

[–] [email protected] 13 points 3 months ago (2 children)

A poker roguelike...I don't get it. But whatever.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I didn't either until I played it. It's kind of hard to describe, but man that dopamine rush when the numbers get big

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

I am afraid to try this title... I don't really need a backlog distraction right now... 😅

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

Push those feelings aside and try it for a while.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 months ago

It was my most played game this year and I played it entirely on Steam Deck.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 3 months ago (2 children)

It's really not that great, DEFINITELY not game of the year material. What would even make you say that? Because it's YOUR game of the year?

Other people have different standards other than "Slightly better graphics and slightly different combat" from a game that's been out for what, over a decade?

[–] [email protected] 24 points 3 months ago (3 children)

What a weirdly hostile take from someone just sharing their opinion about a game they, presumably, really liked.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Not that weird or hostile really, just a fair response to someone coming in and saying, "nah, this one" like an indecisive baby at a toy shop, with no reasoning or argument as to why their choice could be considered better.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 3 months ago

People don't need to write an article for every little opinion they want to share. Guy was just trying to rep a game he liked. It can be that simple.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (2 children)

The "Naah" was sassy, what I'm not allowed to also have some sass?

Edit: Also have you not played Balatro? Absolutely deserving of the title.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Imho your comment was hugely disproportionate. Guy just shared a simple opinion and you practically wrote a think piece in it. I dunno, just doesn't match to me. I get far more hostile and sass vibes from your comment than his, when in reality you're both saying "no this".

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Well I'm sorry if I offended your delicate sensibilities. My reaction was because not only is POE2 kind of crap for what it could be, but Balatro is fantastic. So for them to dismiss Balatro and then suggest such a mid game deserved some backlash. Either way, thanks for your input. I'll try to care more about proportionate response from this moment forward.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Honestly you're the one that comes off as offended to me, I'm just having a conversation. Have a good new year mate.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago

No, you're right. I'm offended that somebody would choose POE2 over Balatro and preface it with a "Naah" as if Balatro wasn't deserving, when it is essentially a modern day solitaire.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago (2 children)

The "Naah" was sassy

Nice alt account. Maybe try to keep better track of which one is which next time 👍

[–] [email protected] 12 points 3 months ago

You shouldn't flaunt your lack of reading comprehension like this. It makes you look silly.

Lemmy can be like this. Share an opinion people don't like and it's like you personally attacked someone. Lol.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago (1 children)

I mean, that's just the internet, really.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago

Well at least social media I guess.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago

It is really really good though.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

They should have stopped at Diablo 2.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

Hey don't get me wrong, PoE is a fantastic game. PoE2 just left me wanting for a hell of a lot more after they've had over a decade of experience making that game already.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Pretty sure most POE2 players would disagree with this.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Oh shit, should have checked the majority opinion before posting!

Whats your opinion on apples?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Just saying that if the people who are meant to be fans of your supposed game of the year are tearing into the dozens of issues the game has, most of which were solved in POE1, it doesn't have a very strong argument.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

Weird to hear that. My only issue so far has been how hard it is to get movement speed on boots. Granted, I'm only just about to start Cruel, so my playtime is low compared to many, but I'm absolutely loving all the boss encounters, particularly with the dodge mechanics. And not needing to worry about socket numbers, colours, and links on gear.

Maybe I should read what others are saying, but I have nothing significant to complain about so far, aside from move speed being a bit too slow.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago (4 children)

How long did it take to click for you? I’ve played for like 20-30 mins. I don’t even really understand the rules.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

What part has you stumped?

Value of the hand is ranked like poker. Each hand is worth a number of chips and a multiplier. The face value of cards scored add to the number of chips. You have a set number of times you can discard per round and you use those to throw away cards and redraw trying to get a good hand. You have so many hands per round to try to reach the goal score. Everything else tweaks those variables to get higher scores per hand, which is necessary because the round goal quickly becomes impossible with the base deck and scores.

After 30 minutes I suppose you know all that...

After my first 30 minutes I was hooked and barely able to play anything else for the next month.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

Took me like 60 seconds to get it. I play poker and rogue likes already though

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

I bounced off of it my first couple rounds too, but then I figured it out enough to start trying builds, and it got a lot more fun

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

I had some prior knowledge before playing by watching someone online play the demo quite a bit, so it didn't take me long to figure out. The major problem I have is that I don't remember which hands are better between straight and flush and around there, but that's easily mitigated by the run button thing on the side.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago

Pff, Balatro has nothing on Jimbo's Game.
