The day started with Trump warmly welcoming Carney to the Oval Office, saying there were some "tough points" to discuss while also praising the former central banker as "a very talented, very good person" who deserved to win the recent federal election. Trump praised Carney's election victory
I think Carney's charmed Trump. Well done.
Trump likes associating with powerful and influential people, even if they don’t align with his goals and beliefs. Carney is a well respected figure with an extensive resume across Canada and Europe.
One thing that can be said for Carney is that over the course of his long career as a banker he must have had considerable experience dealing with people like Trump. By which of course I mean people who are rich and powerful, very great and successful.
Running a central bank isn't exactly dealing with a real estate loans portfolio.
That's true, but they do have to deal with politicians making demands of them all the time. So, he's probably used to trying to do the right thing for the economy, while not freaking out the markets, and while handling politicians who want quick economic fixes to boost their election chances.
Carney must have absolutely stroked Trump's ego, just what is needed when dealing with a malignant narcissist. Smart man.
Honestly, I think every successful meeting with him is basically just this. It's what Russia did until he started to realize they've been fucking with him for the last few months. Zalinsky too, until Trump said some stuff he couldn't let go.
Carney's two for two on this one for sure.
Watched the meeting and I think it went well. I thought Carney handled it very well. He spoke when he had to and stayed silent when he didn't.
Seems like a lot of "maybe" from Donald and not a lot else. I'll believe (any of it) it when I see it.
Carney also praised Trump as a great leader, did the CBC miss that part?
"Thank you for your hospitality, and above all for your leadership. You're a transformational president focused on the economy, with a relentless focus on the American worker. Securing your borders, ending the scourge of fentinal and other opioids, and securing the world."
I do think they know each other prior and that seems quite obvious, and that getting Carney elected was a part of a larger plan to get a pipeline to the east coast to defund Russia; using the Alberta separatism crisis to do so. Trump plays an idiot, but even the level of the tariffs were concocted to push this crisis, which was the true reason for Daniel Smith to go to Maralago.
Ehh… It seems like Carney’s comment is just lip service, and imo it just skirts around things that you just can’t say anything good about. “Transformational” isn’t necessarily a praise, and a “relentless focus on the American worker” doesn’t focus on the policies (which we know have been really bad for American workers) and basically just reiterates Trump’s claimed motivation in some way, so a nothing burger. “Securing your borders” is also a nothing burger cause while it’s what they’re trying to do, is hasn’t necessarily been done successfully or in a good way. “Ending the scourge of fentanyl and other opioids” is just another self-proclaimed point, and in the case of fentanyl, 21g in a whole year from Canada, and of unknown effectiveness from Mexico. And “securing the world” is also a nothing burger cause he hasn’t, but he’s doing things that he thinks is securing the world.
I don’t think it shows what Carney’s true plans and motivations are going into the meeting, so I’d recommend not reading too much into it at the moment. We’ll see what comes out of this whole discussion, and we’ll find out what have Canadians voted into.
Looking at the mention of “leader” from Carney to Trump in transcripts, Carney’s never actually said anything to the effect of “you’re a great leader”. He only said “thank you for your hospitality and above all for your leadership”. That isn’t a praise at all, it’s just a cordial thank you.
So how did you get the impression that Carney was praising Trump as a “great leader”?

"Thanks for your 'leadership'." The subtext is "your absolute jackassery united enough Canadians to stand against your Conservative supporters."
I think Trudeau stepping down was a prerequisite, but the unprovoked trade war and threatening Canadian sovereignty really turned the tide (or rather, to be more supportive of the active role Carney is playing, allowed the tide to be turned).
That's some 3d chess
America wants it, and provincial powers override federal, so there's no real alternative than a crisis unfortunately.
Europe is actually building their military as well. Which their progressive voters needed a crisis to do so.
