A British man has walked away from the wreckage of the Air India crash that killed at least 200 people in an extraordinary tale of survival.

Vishwashkumar Ramesh was in seat 11A on the London-bound Boeing 787-8 flight when it crashed shortly after take off in Ahmedabad, western India.

Mr Ramesh's brother, Nayan Kumar Ramesh, told BBC News Vishwashkumar "has no idea how he survived" and escaped the plane as the only survivor.

There were 169 Indian nationals, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian on the Gatwick Airport-bound flight, Air India said.

WALKED AWAY??? Literally? Thats insane

[–] [email protected] 71 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (1 children)

It's possible that other people survived the initial crash, but it was the ability of this guy to quickly regain consciousness and walk away that meant that he managed to avoid post-crash fires (which others may not have been able to escape). So it might make sense that he only survived because he was able to walk away quickly after the crash.

The fumes and smoke alone would have killed people quickly

"This is my stop."

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

I saw some reporting saying that he somehow jumped out of the plane just before it crashed, but that makes no sense, and he's quoted as saying that he has no idea how he survived.

Un fucking believable. He fucking walked away. Walked to the fucking ambulance. Dude will be swimming in sexual attraction.

walked away like in the movies behind you, when something explodes added for dramatics.

Taking an international flight tomorrow, Friday 13th. My wife is in 11A. Not sure how to feel about this.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 day ago (2 children)

At this point I'd be only booking non-Boeing flights.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 21 hours ago

I believe this is the first fatal incident with the 787 and the first hull loss. It has a remarkable safety record over nearly 14 years.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 22 hours ago (1 children)

I doubt this crash is Boeing's fault. The airframe in this crash was considered very safe.

The more probable cause is Air India being lax in safety.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 22 hours ago

Yeah idk the cause, but the chance of being in a crash yourself is still miniscule, but still a bit scary i guess, even if it's safer than driving.

Ask to switch seats

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

Ask her to buy a lottery ticket? Just to be sure?

(Yes, I know, I'm kidding)

YouTube comments and chat aren't even worth checking out anymore. It's just garbage.

Literally 4chan was celebrating the plane crash

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Wasn't this the plot of Unbreakable, more or less, but with a train instead?

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago

Exactly, although the events leading to the crash were more sinister

Unbreakable movie spoilerThere is a flashback at the end of the movie showing Mr. Glass bombing an airplane and burning a hotel down, along with sabotaging the train Bruce Willis' character survived. It's implied that Mr. Glass had been responsible for other mass causality events to find someone Unbreakable as well.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 day ago

That's a hell of a stiff upper lip.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Time to buy a fucking lottery ticket

[–] [email protected] 2 points 16 hours ago

I think THAT was his lottery win.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

I’d book seat 11A for life….and get it as a tattoo.

That's some Final Destination shit right there. Dude is gonna be looking over his shoulder for the rest of his life

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

I thought final destination had death chase folks who had a vision of an impending accident and they used that foreknowledge to avoid their fate? To be fair, I haven't seen any other than the first one, and that was through my fingers. (I am not a brave man)

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

Final destination.
