I don’t understand the premise of frequent recesses, anymore. They seemed reasonable when people were traveling by horse and buggy and required 2-4 weeks to get back to their district, but now? In the era of phones and planes, why do they still deserve to get half the year off?

[-] [email protected] 134 points 3 days ago

Because it’s a club and we’re not in it.

Well, it shouldn't quite be half the year, but it makes sense to plan some official time to be back in your district. Your constituents shouldn't have to travel to DC to see you in person.

[-] [email protected] 25 points 3 days ago

But they’re mostly just dicking around elsewhere with the free time. The time isn’t bound to any structure. I wouldn’t doubt that we get less time with our representatives today than at the founding of the country, when dying of dysentery was a plausible end for a casual walk.

[-] [email protected] 16 points 3 days ago

Also with telecommunications, we should reasonably be able to access our representatives wherever they are at all times. It's not like we don't live in a videoconference connected world, we absolutely do. We have phones, email, videoconferencing, and all manner of being able to directly contact our representatives without having to travel to Washington DC.

The MAGA Nazis are avoiding meeting their constituents at all costs. It's just a vacation for them.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago

Probably not. Appeasing their corporate overlords takes a lot of work.

Because you allow it.

[-] [email protected] 14 points 3 days ago

They still need all that time off to suck up to the donor class, though, don't they? Because fuck you, is why.

“Christian” Mike Johnson doing his best to give cover to pedophiles. Wonder if him and his son discuss these sins at bedtime together while going over their porn monitoring.

[-] [email protected] 18 points 3 days ago

Mike Letmeseeyourkids Johnson.

No rule against pedophilia in the Ten Commandments.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago

So Christian he's practically Catholic.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago

Protestants have plenty of child rape as well. For instance, maga mikey's church...

Don't lump chickens in with them. This isn't cowardice, it's complicity.

[-] [email protected] 9 points 3 days ago

A lot of the people in charge of the country are child rapists.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago

Chickens are also capable of intelligence, compassion, and bravery protecting their flock. So unfair comparison, really.

[-] [email protected] 13 points 3 days ago

It is a Tuesday. 🌮

[-] [email protected] 35 points 3 days ago

Oh so he's on the list, got it

[-] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago

Maybe but more likely they bought time for spoliation. By the time they're like fine ok here you go it'll all be gone and the effort will be sorta worthless.

[-] [email protected] 35 points 3 days ago

Huh, what a coincidence, Epstein always looked forward to recess too.

[-] [email protected] 19 points 3 days ago

Well, this will put those conspiracy allegations to bed.

[-] [email protected] 19 points 3 days ago

It's not going away Mikey.

[-] [email protected] 25 points 3 days ago

Hold up, last I checked its still July...I think you have another week there Mr speaker

[-] [email protected] 28 points 3 days ago

Imagine if we could dock a weeks pay for them going home...

[-] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

The mass majority of their “pay” comes from grifts, donors, and other corruption outside of their official salary from the Congress.

[-] [email protected] 16 points 3 days ago

Why do they get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars while at the same time skipping entire months worth of work?

[-] [email protected] 8 points 3 days ago

Because Americans let them. That’s why they get away with anything: they have nothing to fear.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

They go back to their districts and work there for most of it. Supposed to keep them informed about the will of the people.

I’m sure most just vacation the whole time but some might still give a shit, I dunno

[-] [email protected] 5 points 3 days ago

Most of them spend a huge amount of their time fundraising whether congress is in session or not.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 3 days ago

Jn whatever country replaces the US, we need to have publicly funded elections. We have to get the money out of politics. Eliminate PACs while we're at it.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Doesn’t matter if you don’t completely decouple and depoliticise the judiciary. Otherwise, over time, you’ll be back here again.

Here is an amazing write up on all of trump's connections to epstein.

[-] [email protected] 12 points 3 days ago

Thanks. I'm embarrassed to admit that I thought the 2003 birthday letter was a meme, until right now.

Like the text was real, but somebody superimposed it onto a lurid drawing, adding T's signature for extra disgust.

Turns out it was Trump himself who did all that. And thanks to the WSJ for holding up to at least some journalistic integrity, sticking to the truth.

[-] [email protected] 17 points 3 days ago

That pretty much confirms it

This is the DEMOCRATS Fault that the Republican led House is Protecting Infamous CHILD SEX TRAFFICKER Jeffrey Epstein and his Best Friend Republican President DONALD J TRUMP!

[-] [email protected] 10 points 3 days ago

Will somebody think of the children?

[-] [email protected] 25 points 3 days ago

These republicans are always thinking about children.

[-] [email protected] 7 points 3 days ago

Republicans do think of the children because they’re pedophiles.

I reckon a good number of them won't be returning from recess. They'll start sounding up the neurodivergents for the "wellness camps" during the August recess and also use the opportunity to murder or jail their opponents probably using ICE operatives. Dark times ahead.

[-] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago

A whole week early? Unacceptable. I don’t get an extended vacation when I feel like it. Why should they?

America must keep Dear Leader in power. They haven’t even got around to the portraits in every home yet. Probably won’t need to, it’s happening naturally.

Your deification of your elected leader is apparently so strong now that mere humans are abusable, at least non-cis-white-male-conservative-natural-Americans.
