It's never about winning the war. The pouring of a horrifying amount of money is the point.

Fuck I love Margaret Killjoy and company!

In what universe did they lose the war on drugs? Marijuana never got rescheduled. People still get their lives ruined over it. It's impossible to consume cannabis and be gainfully employed at the same time in the US and a sickening majority of people STILL believe this is how things should be. Corporations collude together to make sure they're all using the exact same drug testing procedures so that really valuable people can't just decide to go somewhere that treats them better. Yet they do nothing to fight with or systematically harm people who consume alcohol when off duty or come into work hungover.

All the states with lower costs of living are still allowed to put people in jail for possession. And people fight to keep it this way. They made Florida ballot initiatives need a 60% to pass just to defeat the recent marijuana amendment and NO ONE FUCKING CARED. This is far from "losing" the war on drugs.

The drugs are still here. More than never before. Doesn't matter if the war is still raging. They aren't going away.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 10 hours ago (1 children)

I guess I'm going to have to tell all the people at my company and my friends' workplaces that they can't be gainfully employed while they use weed as their primary or (increasingly often) only intoxicant.

The "war on drugs" was never about winning. It was about funneling public money into private pockets and about scaring the populace into compliance. Same with the immigration bullshit.

Let me introduce you to the racist motive

The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and Black people. You understand what I’m saying? We knew we couldn’t make it illegal to be either against the war or Black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and Blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were lying about the drugs? Of course we did.

The US doesn't always lose. They won against the indigenous peoples in the Indian Wars (1775-1924).

[–] [email protected] 5 points 13 hours ago (2 children)

Does Vicky think Russia is losing the war?

[–] [email protected] 10 points 11 hours ago

They certainly haven't won

[–] [email protected] 3 points 12 hours ago (1 children)

It is kind of a weird take when Russia has captured quite a bit of land. Sure, it's costing them a lot (you might even say in inordinate sum), but characterizing them as losing is a hard sell.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 hours ago (1 children)

They are losing right now...they can't actually replace the airplanes and other resources, due to their economy slowly crashing.

So that will be their undoing. Dad is going to get a reality check soon (=

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 hour ago

I hope you are right

[–] [email protected] 8 points 15 hours ago

winning the war isnt the goal

[–] [email protected] 9 points 15 hours ago

"The US will always do the right thing... after having exhausted all other possibilities."

[–] [email protected] 8 points 15 hours ago

"Terror". The US loves waging unwinnable wars against inanimate objects (drugs) and feelings (terror) lol totally irrational.

[–] [email protected] 56 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Well just like with War on Drugs is not about winning. It's about making as much money off of it as you can. Note they didn't try to address the problems with immigration. They didn't change the Green Card system. They didn't expand the number of immigration judges. They didn't do anything except fund ice and fund more detention centers which are privately run at extremely huge markups.

And prison slavery is legal. Guess who will be working the farms

Edit: it's legal.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 15 hours ago (1 children)

Prison slavery is technically illegal, but they are paid incredibly meager wages to where it's essentially legal slavery.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 14 hours ago

I meant to say prison slavery is legal

The bloated ICE budget isn't just to wage war against immigrants, it's also because they realized the military wouldn't side with them if they tried to seize/retain power. Now they have a massive, well-funded army of racist thugs that answers only to them, sidestepping the Constitution and chain-of-command entirely.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 day ago (1 children)

This is like the SS in 1920s germany, right?

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago

It was the SA back then, the brownshirts. But I think the inspiration is more the Rosgvardiya in Russia

[–] [email protected] 9 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The military are actually trained though. There's no point trying to train these guys they are military rejects.

The US military versus these guys would be more farcical than anything else.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago (3 children)

The point is that the military will sit it out since they can't be deployed domestically

[–] [email protected] 1 points 12 hours ago

Why not? Trump just deployed them to LA and got away with it. He could do it again. The courts have proven about a dozen times since the election that they will not hold him accountable for blatant constitutional violations. Half of congress is on his side so they will never hold him accountable either. There's nobody left to stop him from doing whatever he wants.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 20 hours ago

If the US gets to that point I don't think those rules will apply anymore.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

not if the protesters are declared foreign agents/a civil war is declared.

look at the Syrian, Sudanese and Egyptian revolutions

At this point, after seeing that new budget, I'm just trying to think of ways to defraud the shit out of ICE. They're going to be writing checks without even glancing at the PO unless it's over 10 million

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Send their office an invoice for whatever, they'll probably just pay it.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

Make sure to also provide the service. Otherwise you could get in trouble for fraud.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

That has to be a market for XXL bulletproof vests. Although it's the US so that's probably already a thing.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

Right right. But you can't funnel money out of the system if there isn't any going into it.
