I don't think anyone here was a hippie in the 60s...
The summer of love was summer 1967. Assuming a young, 18 year old hippie, that's a 75 year old man today.

Don't underestimate people, @clubby. I WAS a hippie of the 60s. I got tear gassed in Washington at the protest Jane Fonda attended. I've also been programming since I was 14 years old. Do the math and see if you can figure out the language, newbie.
And NO, this was not the America we envisioned! This was also not the America that Samuel Adams, Thomas Jefferson, John Paine, Ben Franklin, and all the others envisioned. Since JFK, the Republicans have decimated education resulting in the ability to brainwash the idiots who voted for a dictator thinking he was going to lower food and housing prices.
America has jumped the shark.
Do the math and see if you can figure out the language, newbie.
Fortran? Though my parent (still alive, not on Lemmy) was a computer programmer in the early 70s and programmed a mainframe with punch-cards, I think it was some kind of assembly.
Fortran, yes. And machine language. In those days, you had to put the boot loader in manually from binary switches on the control panel. Ah, the wonders of non-volatile memory LOL. COBOL and BASIC later and JCL which was job control lang for mainframes.
My guess is FORTRAN.
Why do coders seem to much more often have the courage of their convictions than those with other occupations?
Sam Adams
I mean, yeah, beer is great and all….
as in free beer? 😁
As in, I think he meant John Adams.
I meant Sam, although they are both considered Founding Fathers of US. I didn't remember that John Adams was a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Besides, Samuel was a signer AND has beer named after him
You could have just said nothing instead of being such a wet blanket
Could've, yes ... it's insulting to assume things about people - it pisses them off. It's always better to just listen.
The 60's messed with us. Two things come to mind:
A large chunk of hippies who I met went fully opposite, they embraced capitalism and the opportunities presented to them due to unlocked access of education and society becoming and being less hierarchical. And then they pulled up the ladder, denying the next generation the same benefits.
Conservatives got collective heart attacks across the globe and a counter movement started to eradicate the things and goals achieved during the 60's. This took a couple of decades but we all know you can count on with conservatives, they have long goal vision and stamina.
So, the generation who got freedoms and opportunities of the likes you will most probably never ever see in your lifetime is almost dead, they will not help out and remedy this, they are done.
And we can see in the world right now what the counter movement of conservatives has achieved, they 'win' at just about every turn, especially politically. This is not likely to go away, it will probably get worse.
Enjoy the results of the 60's, hippies and conservative plans to tackle that pesky freedom and equality shit...
Labels really suck. I don't believe that hippies could possibly be so heterogeneous. Mostly, they were united in the 1960s in their anti-war position. Their older brothers/relatives died in Korea. And their friends and schoolmates were dying in Vietnam. And for what? Someone else's war? But I don't think they had too much else in common. Well, maybe drugs, LOL.
Conservatives is a crappy label too. My view is that the Republican party has become that party that wants an authoritarian oligarchy. Now they can check that off their list.
I say Republicans, instead of Conservatives, because the latter word has a much more time invariant definition. Republican position on the other hand has changed considerably since Republican Abe Lincoln's time.
keep in mind anyone who was a teenager in the 60's. so say 20 at 1970. would be 74 or older now.
