At the very least, google is scraping your emails for data.

Sell targeted ads based on information they learn about you. It's a pretty straightforward business model.

[–] catloaf@lemm.ee 5 points 5 days ago

"Senator, we sell ads."

[–] WanderingThoughts@europe.pub 16 points 5 days ago

Mostly build a profile so they know what ads to show you, and a few helpful features such as telling you have to go to get to your flight or appointment on time by reading the confirmation mail. These days also for your AI assistent.

[–] Today@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago

BUTTERY MALES

Even less secure than Signal. Google probably has stored copies of those emails for the 13 eyes countries, and who know what else had access to them.

[–] drdiddlybadger@pawb.social 42 points 5 days ago (2 children)

You know several nations had access to each of those accounts. These idiots reuse their passwords all the time.

[–] Apricot@lemm.ee 35 points 5 days ago

[–] huppakee@lemm.ee 24 points 5 days ago

Should have used @clintonemail.com domain instead

This is what happens when both parties excuse anything their "team" does....

Too many Americans were fine with Hillary and mad about this, or mad about Hillary and fine with this.

Meanwhile saying something as basic as:

Everyone needs to be held to the same standard

And both sides pile on accusing you of "whataboutism" for saying standards should apply evenly. It makes zero sense, but happens fucking constantly

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 85 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Of course you’re “both sides” on this. You do understand that the Secret Service oversaw the server, and that Trump’s DoJ investigated it?

Do you also know that the NSA explicitly advised against the use of Signal for any governmental purpose, citing recent exploits by Russian hackers? Hell, Gmail even states that it reads your emails during signup. Still, Republicans are refusing an investigation.

This is not a both sides argument anymore. Get off the soapbox. Ya done.

[–] False@lemmy.world 38 points 5 days ago (2 children)

Hilary was wrong to do that, and this is wrong too.

[–] Serinus@lemmy.world 9 points 5 days ago

Hillary was wrong in the same way W was wrong and several before her.

It was shitty and borderline illegal, but not much more than smoking weed in the wrong state is illegal. Everyone else is doing it and the law is rarely enforced.

Hillary fully deserved a slap on the wrist. And it would be good if it stops. But it was also unusual to pick that time to enforce it.

And what these guys are currently doing is wildly more reckless and irresponsible. At minimum it disqualifies them from the job. Prison time should be a possibility.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 8 points 5 days ago (2 children)

A correct but unfortunately unpopular opinion

[–] frezik@midwest.social 11 points 5 days ago

Not really. When you frame it in a way where you don't sound like a right wing nutter, I find people tend to accept it.

[–] disguy_ovahea@lemmy.world 10 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

That’s exactly what I’m saying. This doesn’t equate until an investigation is performed.

[–] solomon42069@lemmy.world 11 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Yes and a parking infraction is the same as a hit and run because they both happened on the road with cars. What a nonsense bunch of words you put up there as wisdom lmao.

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago (1 children)

What is hard about understanding this?

Since you like cars think of it like this:

If cops fail to enforce minor traffic tickets, do you not understand how people will stop following those minor rules, creating a culture where everyone disregards all driving laws causing serious consequences?

Like, this shit is as simple as cause and effect as dropping a glass of water and the water not staying in the glass ..

But you and lots of others just can't understand.

[–] OsrsNeedsF2P@lemmy.ml 5 points 5 days ago (1 children)

I've seen a few people on Lemmy get this right, but no, this is not the same thing. Hilary was running her own email server, which allowed her to erase communications with no oversight. The Trump admin did something similar with Signal, but using Gmail is not the same problem

[–] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 2 points 5 days ago

I’ve seen a few people on Lemmy get this right, but no, this is not the same thing

Who said it was the same amount of bad?

I said they both broke the law and should have been held to the same standard: the law.

This isn't complicated, although I have started to notice the ones not understanding this all have accounts on lemmy.ml

So I'm going to be an optimistic and assume you all could understand this, you're just intentionally not

[–] atzanteol@sh.itjust.works 2 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Hey now, you can't go around lemmy and point out liberal hypocrisy!

[–] iz_ok@sh.itjust.works 3 points 5 days ago

Yeah! I like to spread my hypocrisy generously.
