Meanwhile I as a German look at the French with envy everytime they burn down their capital the moment their goverment does something that slightly inconveniences them.

[–] [email protected] 58 points 1 week ago

As an American, same.

[–] [email protected] 41 points 1 week ago

We should all be so based.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 week ago (3 children)

I had a discussion with my friend regarding socialism and the argument they had against socialism is everyone don't need to work hard and I was like, isn't that good tho?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

We still need labor to have a functional society, so you need some level of guardrails to ensure enough capable people are working. Socialism doesn't have a great answer for how to do that.

(just gonna shoehorn this anvil into this elevator here...)

For cutting off the heads of the elites, and crepes.

[–] [email protected] 29 points 1 week ago (2 children)

How do you cut the head of a crepe off?

[–] [email protected] 17 points 1 week ago

Very carefully.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

By dropping a big heavy knife

PS: poor gp. They even put an oxford comma

[–] [email protected] 21 points 1 week ago

tbf, both equally fantastic accomplishments, vive la France! 🙏

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 week ago

I'm a crepe

I'm a weiiiiirdoooooo

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 week ago

And subsequently cutting off the heads of almost everyone else.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

And for wildly over-pronouncing crescent.

Remembered for this by the Americans.

I sometimes think they get so fixated on this as some kind of psychogical distraction to avoid remembering their own country spent most of that war sitting on the sidelines making a profit.

[–] [email protected] 20 points 1 week ago (2 children)

Wut? The US was still in the middle of economic disaster when WW2 began. What reason did the US have to enter Europe until Germany's allies attacked us?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Yeah but you should know by now the US is a pile of shit for taking too long to get into any major conflict, but ALSO the US is a pile of shit for involving themselves in other countries conflicts.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 week ago

There is a huge difference between entering a war to help stop acts of aggression, versus going around supporting acts of aggression, helping to depose democratically elected leaders, or funding genocides.

I think you will find it is the last three that have attracted the real criticism over the years.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago

The US was still in the middle of an economic disaster

So was everyone else, even Germany was starting to run into food shortages. If anything this would be a reason to go to war, as the only thing that ended up getting us out of the great depression was the war.

What reason did the US have to enter Europe until Germany's allies attacked us?

Stopping fascism, and the holocaust. We've started wars on way less justified grounds than that.

[–] [email protected] 18 points 1 week ago

America was on the sidelines converting most of a continent from a depression era economy to a war time economy and tooling up every manufacturer that made metal into making weapons. FFS, Singer (yes, the sewing machine company) made 1911 .45s.

Then we started sending war materiel to the allies measured in millions of tons.

Then we launched an invasion force of fucking biblical proportions just to get a toehold in France. All while fighting in Italy and Northern Africa, AND while fighting the Empire of Japan across the world's largest ocean (with our best base and most of the best (7th) fleet wrecked).

Sorry it took a couple of years.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Tell that to my dead grandfathers that killed Nazis to save your asses along with global freedom and democracy. We have our warts like EVERYONE yet we're first to fall on the sword and eat shit like this. Fuck that. I'm not conceding my fucking country or its name. Especially to 250 year old allies with whom we formed the first West free of monarchs.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

You hit the nail on the head! This is exactly why I think the American attitude to the French is so peculiar:

Especially to 250 year old allies with whom we formed

American culture should remember the role the French played in the American War of Independence (and the French great great great great great grandfathers who died for you) instead of defaulting to that weird and crass "cheese eating surrender monkeys" nonsense.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 6 days ago (1 children)

The ones with brains know. I'm not special. Remember which voices are typically loudest.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 days ago (1 children)

I'm not interested in mouth breathing MAGA crowd though.

I made this point here because too many people on the American left spout this particular rhetoric.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Idiots come in all ~~sizes~~ sides

[–] [email protected] 2 points 3 days ago (1 children)

Oh, sure. Let me rephrase. I'm not interested in the knuckle dragging mouthbreathers of any stripe.

Too many seemingly otherwise normal, educated US people seem to blindly lean in on this particular rhetoric.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago (1 children)

I was listening to Dennis Leary's Asshole this morning realizing it was always both sides in this particular way. I knew maga when they were working class Dems. They didn't suddenly change values ten years ago

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I haven't heard that song in forever! I'd forgotten how catchy it is.

Yes, exceptionalism seems to know no political boundaries.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

It really is. Most generic 90s guitar music ever. Sandler did the same.

Americans when a country surrenders to a heavily armed death machine: lol, surrender monkeys!

Americans when a country surrenders to a diaper wearing fascist old man: USA! USA! USA!

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Americans when a country ~~surrenders to~~ rallies behind a diaper wearing fascist old man

He won with a majority the second time through. This isn't a fight Americans lost.

Meanwhile, in France: French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday congratulated "President Donald Trump", saying he was ready to work with the US vote frontrunner "with respect and ambition" like "we managed to do for four years".

I mean, maybe this was 11D chess to give Airbus monopoly status in the global civilian aircraft market. But on its face that looks like the French taking a huge L.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 week ago (2 children)

That's what politicians do, especially if they don't like the winner. Yeah of course Macron thinks trump is a petulant man child, but it doesn't make sense to needlessly antagonise people as unstable as trump.

It's like if you're walking down the road and see a crack head, you're not going to flip them off and call them a twat. Because A: they might attack you and B: having a reputation as someone who is easy to get along with is a good thing.

Buuuut, your bread and pastries will have way more cachet than German bread and Austrian pastries do. And your cuisine and wine will have somewhat more cachet than those of Spain or (debatably) Italy.

The pettiest French foodie: worth it.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 1 week ago

Hey, – on the plus side – no one bothers to look very hard at why you're still taxing your former colonies for you having colonized them?

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Meanwhile the UK keep their aura of Europe's saviors, nonwhistanding the fact British troops evacuated swiftly from Dunkirk in may-june 1940, leaving the French alone against the Wehrmacht...

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Didn't we (UK) also bomb the French fleet albeit to avoid the Germans from repurposing them?

My take is shit happens in war, the US did what they could when they could. But the same dignity needs to be given to the French.

We were allied then, we sure as hell need to be allied now

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago

Hell yeah, more than ever comrade!
